EU 'should ban inefficient cars'

The EU should ban the sale of cars that do under 35 miles to the gallon, the ex-chairman of oil giant Shell says.

Another brilliant quote from him.

Sir Mark said: "Nobody needs a car that does 10-15mpg. "We need very tough regulation saying that you can't drive or build something less than a certain standard. You would be allowed to drive an Aston Martin - but only if it did 50-60mpg."

Hang on, I've got a 4 year old Honda Accord Tourer, efffectively some of the latest technology and supposed to be clean and good, yet I get 30mpg, mainly because of the weight of it - are they suggesting I give up my boot and get a 1.3 hatchback? Do they have a suggestion where I should put the dogs then?

There is plenty more of this sort of thing to come, all in the interests of the "biggest threast to face mankind". The precedent has been set. Have you noticed the laying on thick of "Global warming" - sorry "climate change" reports in the news of late ;)

The irony of that guys statement is he probably flies all over the world and that spews out a huge amount of carbon emissions.

I have as we all do a car that does under 25 mpg. I bet my carbon footprint is well below that of the "i drive a Prius" type driver. As most of us use our cars as weekend / fun use and have more frugal cars for the daily grind.

Guy who made his millions from oil, now driving a Prius and suggesting we all do the same.... either utter piss take or hes actually lost his marbels!

For me, if i had a 1.3 something small, id do far far more miles than i do now, probably cause even more polution - as i could afford to!

At the end of the day, its a suggestion from a loopy businessman, very unlikely to come to anything. Even if it did, they couldnt simply back date it, it would make about 80% of the countrys cars illegal to drive - instant economic meltdown. So it wont affect supras, although i can see supras and the like being banned from city centres etc one day, its already been suggested :(

On the other hand, is it a bad thing if all new cars had a set of standards to meet. We all know at some point we have to clean up our act, and im sure the auto manufacturers will rise to the occation and produce fast cars that dont kill a polar bear per mile in CO2 emmisions if they had their hands forced.

Those are silly cars. I forget what the exact stat is, but you need to replace the batteries every so many years (3?) at a cost of thousands. Where do all those hazardous batteries end up?

Not to mention the whole process to manufacture the batteries, they go all over the world. It's actually 3 times better on the environment to drive a Hummer :)

This guy is chairman of anglo american - bearing in mind the pollution and contamination resulting from mining and refining copper, zinc and gold, not to mention diamonds and AA's entry into iron smelting....and COAL mining  (read: burning a hole in the ozone layer) I really don't see that he is in a position to dictate to us on environmental issues. Besides....

...whats the bet he drives a petrol guzzling 4 litre chelsea tractor, or an equally fuel hungry Merc/BMW etc or his missus does

As for larger engined cars dying out, our supra's are still going strong after 14 years or more so he can stick that up his Prius tail pipe and smoke it!! :p
