Reporting suspicious behaviour to police?

I'm guessing there's probably not much the police can do but around 5.30pm today I was down at my unit, locked up went down and chatted to one of the guys down the other end, while we we chatting a red estate with a couple of young chavvy lads pulled in at the bottom, they looked sussy as soon as they pulled in, they promptly turned around and went back up towards the exit, but as they were heading back up they stopped and looked at a fiesta that had alloys and a few other bits and then stopped at my car, then another just heading out.

I took the reg of the van and told the guy with the fiesta to make sure he's not leaving it out tonight, but I was still at my unit till 11 this evening and the same car turned up, this time the guy driving and 2 girl passengers, again they went to the bottom and turned around where I had seen them earlier, I didnt aprroach them but I stood outside my unit as did my neighbour who was also staying late and we both made sure they saw we were taking notice of them and that we were writing their plate down, they continued past and went off, myself and neighbour left 20 mins later to see if they were still around but no sign at all.

so do I just hold onto what I've seen until something happens then report or do I notify the police tomorrow regardless? would the police do anything with the info or just chuck it away?

The Police will do fook all Tom!!:(

I have reported 3 or 4 people recently for suspicious behaviour, or really bad driving (Last week, Focus Estate ran two red lights and went the wrong way up a one way street in less that a 1/4 of a mile...) I have heard nothing after this! I reported one car a couple of months ago and the copper didn't even ask for the reg no, that I had taken down!!

The coppers are overstretched and a huge dose of apathy has been delivered to all knicks accross the country!!

By the sounds of it they are already doing something. Not quite sure how you can make that statement from what has already been said above.

I know of many times when the Police have done far more than 'fook all' in relation to reports made to the public.

Maybe being an ex officer might have affected my judgement. They may be good around your neck of the woods but in Greater Manchester you are wasting your time reporting anything!!

That's as maybe, but in this instance how do you know that the vehicle that Tom has seen isn't stolen or flagged up already with an information report or already known to have been involved in crime. By passing the info on, that might go on the next shifts briefing. Any info however trivial it may appear to be, could be actually quite important, but it'll be never known unless it's passed on.

You should know, being ex job and all, that reporting people for driving offences as a member of the public requires you to give a written information at a Police station. The problem with members of the public reporting bad driving or offences, is that the offence when committed at the time wasn't witnessed by Police, therefore the CPS (who make all charging decisons these days) are unlikely to proceed with any charge because the likelyhood of gaining a successful prosecution on the word of one member of public against another is slim. The vast majority of the public, on being told that they would have to take the stand and point the accusatory finger against someone else, would back down at the prospect.

So I wouldn't necessarily call it apathy, just that most frontline are run ragged, have little or no time to be proactive and are slaves to the talking box on their chest and are not going to bother with something that in all reality isn't going to go anywehere. ;)
