Stock Intercooler Crumble

I was just removing a stone from my intercooler this evening and noticed that when I pulled it out, the area around it broke away. To my surprise, I am able to gently pull the fins of the cooler away really easily with my fingers. If you gently rub the fins, they simply disintegrate like cardboard.

This can't be right can it, surely it is aluminium or something. I did the same with my radiator (which looks like a similar substance) and it was fine, just a plyable metal that would break if you pressed too hard.

Is it time for a new IC.

If I do get one, is there much of a difference between the stock and a HKS S-Type (or R Type) and similar. WIll I have to change the front bumber for a FMIC?

Cheers Guys

Your SMIC is indeed Fooked! :(

HKS intercoolers are fine the type S is easier to fit as its smaller and will support upto 550BHP.

Otherwise get a Blitz one - they've just released a new range

Or get a custom one from Docking Engineering or some other rad/intercooler maker in the UK...these companies will also fit them and create pipe kits at the same time.

The bumper does have to be cut a bit but you can't tell from the outside.

You have to remove the Active Spoiler Motor and gubbins, fixing the Active Spoiler in the down position to allow the FMIC to fit correctly.

:D

2 points sir!!

Though many find they have remove the entire system..... :(

Thanks Chaps,

One more thing.

Is a larger s type intercooler going to give me a performance increase.

I am not thinking of taking my mods any further so 550bhp is a little OTT although if a larger FMIC will increase BHP, I would consider getting one.

A larger intercooler will not tend to increase BHP, it's more the efficiency of the core that helps. My guess is that the R-type and S-type cores have similar efficiency ratings.

BTW the HKS R-type is the larger one and the S-Type is the smaller. The S-type should be OK for stock twins or a small single upto about 550-600BHP. So if your target is only that then you'd be better off saving the money (about £600) and going for the smaller one.
