Terminator
Having read some none too positive information about the quality of filtration of the HKS mushroom filter, I though I would try a simple experiment. I just bought a new filter, which is supposed to be treated with HKS magic formula sticky stuff. I have several old filters, which I washed out and kept for emergency use. I bought some very cheap and thick motor oil and coated a washed filter with it. I held both the new filter and the oil moisten one up to a light source. There was a slight difference in the amount of light coming through the two filters. The HKS magic gunk coated filter let more light through than my crap oil soaked one. The HKS stuff is supposed to stay in place and not migrate to the bottom of the filter when in use, which may happen if I used an oil soaked one in my car. If an oil soaked filtergives better filtration only for a short time, I am prepared to change it as often as required. Just have to clean out the washing machine each time. Has anyone else tried reusing an HKS mushroom filter with oil?

Givn they are so bad I'm possibly going to change it soon, I think the Apexi one was good - there was a site tha did tests with a vacum cleaner and filter paper, but I can't find it anymore. I thknk I posted the line here a while ago though. Site showing rolling road test results for air filters. http://www.ftooc.org/contents/pages/project/filter.htm
Guest Martin F
Remember flow of the filters can be an issue as well. Not sure how well your engine oil one will flow.
Adam W
I can't help thinking it would be well worth re-doing these tests with a bit more scientific rigour than using an old vacuum cleaner. Between us we probably already own most of the filters on the market, so we wouldn't have to buy them. All we need now is a suction device that accurately mirrors how the engine "draws breath", and a way of assessing how much dirt is let through. I think I have an old vacuum cleaner in the garage somwhere . . .
Terminator
Could this be a focus for the next meet some where?
GavinL
I find it difficult to understand why anyone would persist with a filter system that has been the known cause of turbo problems. What is it about inductions kits that makes the risk so worthwhile?
Matt Harwood
I've taken off my HKS SPF and replaced the standard box with a TRD panel filter. I'm probably wrong but the power delivery seems smoother and there seems to be a bit more response at the bottom end.
Terminator
I have my stock induction kit and may be putting it back on soon with an alternative panel filter, for two reasons, the alleged poor filtration and summer under bonnet temperatures. I was just curious to know if anyone else had tried alternative fluids in the filter in an attempt to improve filtration. I have had five filter as I do not leave them on long and each one appears to have different amount of the magic sticky gunk. This last one appears particularly dry.
