Declaring SORN and 3rd Party F&T Insurance

Hi Guys..

Long time since I posted but daily reader!

Just had a change of situation and need to tighten my belt a bit. Been forced to drive my wifes Ford KA (boy thats fun!!!!!!) and im hardly touching my supra. Prob done about 400 miles since September. So I figured I would declare is SORN and reduce my insurance.

However, im shocked to find i cant get my insurance below 330 - this is with limited miles (3000), At the mo I pay about 500 so the saving is pretty poor. I have tried usual places of Admiral and Elephant, confused etc. Am even storing it at my parents which is the sleepiest village in the world. Got 10 years plus no claims and only alloy wheels. Cat 1 Clifford alarm. Also its just an SZ so i cant understand what more i need to do .

I really would hate to sell it but at the mo im spending nearly 700 quid a year to drive it once every couple of months! Also I dont think id get that much for it (compared to the emotional damage of losing it!)

Any thoughts? Any tips?

Class One

When you saying 'laying' up insurance, is this different to 3rd party f&t? is this thru Car insurance firm as its not something ive ever heard of.

Perhaps I should call one of the Insurance brokers and ask. It seems crazy that it only reduces by such a small amount.

Collectors,

My supra is 96 plate so isnt that too young for collectors? thought it was 15 or 20 years?

Cheers for the suggestions - appreciated.

Laying up insurance is when a car is declared off road and have no intention of using it for an agreed period. You'll have to speak to a broker or specialist direct, I doubt that the online services could provide that type of cover. It's a different kind of motor insurance with conditions applied to it, but could be ideal for your circumstances.

i have simply garaged mine and removed the important parts like my ecu and ignition unit. I will re-insure it again when I have the time or money to stick it on the road. When you get to cheap insurance age it doesn't really seem to matter that much what car you drive or how much you drive it. They are insuring you based on your previous insurance history more than anything else.

Thanks Class One, i will def be following this up tomorrow. Sounds like a good solution. Thanks

Daston, cancelling insurance sounds a bit scary to me! altho i guess no one is gonna steal it with most of the parts missing! What if there is a fire? very unlikely and probably a calculated risk. My parents garage is full of crap and my house has no garage, so thats no really idea.
