tbourner
Can anyone recommend a torch to buy? I need something quite small, the best thing I've got is a 4 cell maglite, but obviously that's massive!!! It'll be for walking, so if I go for a treck in the dark and end up in the woods or something I'd like something powerful but small enough to stick in a pocket (quite large pockets mind). Scott
Don't touch maglite's they are crap by todays standards. Go for a 7 led torch. They are relatively small (usually 1 battery) and they last for ages. The light off them is unreal too. I have a snapon one which i think cost around £40. Cheaper ones can be bought for around £10. They aren't quite as good but for walking they are definitely good enough. Scott =op

SupraAyf
Mini-Maglite with hi-power bulb plus optional red filter attachment - wouldn't leave the UK without one;)
Marco
I've got one like this. 21 LED's, it takes 3xAAA batteries, very bright! It's great http://www.truetools.co.uk/acatalog/Brand_New_Products_Here_.html

Kranz
Try the candlepower forum. Plenty of torch geeks on there that can advise you of custom built Surefire torches. I use a Surefire 6P. Great quality & powerful as a headlight..... almost
tbourner
I think I've decided on a Fenix T1 Q5, seems pretty good!! What's the difference between a textured and smooth reflector? What effect does it have?
Jspec Germany
Surefire all the way. That's what we use in the Air Force.
Kranz
IIRC a textured reflector makes the beam of light even, the beam from a std reflector is brighter in the centre and fades out to the edges.

Soop Dogg
Talking of wind-ups, I've got a wind up torch in the car. Only 3 LED's, but it's good enough for occasional use and would be fine to just keep in your pocket for an emergency. And you'll never get a flat battery. I've got a pretty decent LED cycling light that could always double as a torch.
