importing cars from the states

Does anyone have any experience or knowledge about importing cars from the USA? With the pound so strong against the dollar now might be a good time to look into buying some american muscle.

What I need to know is:

- how much would it cost to ship a car across

- What regulations, tests, paperwork, certificates etc would the car have to meet to get it registered

Also if anyone knows of any guides on importing cars or contacts that would be great.

Thanks

I have just done a bit of price calculating based on the importing guide that I found and have put together a list of a few US cars.

The list comprises of the US price, which is the cost of the cheapest US car I could find including shipping, taxes etc.

The list also has the UK price which is the price of cheapest equivilent listed on autotrader.co.uk and how much you would save when importing yourself.

--------------------------

05 Mustang GT (v8 version)

--------------------------

US Price: £12223.25

UK Price: £17500

Saving: £5276.75

--------------------------

05 Corvette C6

--------------------------

US Price: £21917

UK Price: £27000

Saving: £5083

--------------------------

07 Shelby GT500 Mustang

--------------------------

US Price: £28379.50

UK Price: £40000

Saving: £11620.50

--------------------------

04 Dodge Viper SRT-10 Convertible

--------------------------

US Price: £28961.13

UK Price: £35000

Saving: £6038.87

--------------------------

Corvette Z06

--------------------------

US Price: £38719.50

UK Price: £51000

Saving: £12280.50

--------------------------

06 Dodge Viper SRT-10 Coupe

--------------------------

US Price: £43824.87

No UK price for comparison

So there you go, clearly some great savings to be made if your thinking about getting an american car.

do a google mate. I was looking at vipers a few months back (still am). Its around 2k for the shipping cost, 4% duty + 17.5% VAT and then SVA tests

Check out the Vipers at Atlantic sportscars. Was considering one before I got the Prowler.

They look so tacky inside, really puts me off.:(

What year vipers are you refering to. The new srt-10's or the older models like the GTS and the rt-10. I am not a massive fan of the older vipers but an srt-10 coupe in blue with white stripes would be my ideal car

Hi all

just a quick update on my quest for an american import. I am now looking at a 67 gt 390 mustang (the bullitt car) and looking to get one imported from the states. However the real killer is the import duty and vat which collectivly work ut at about 30% of what you actually pay for the car.

So what I am thinking is would it be possible to pay the full amount to the seller and then get a reciept for a smaller amount. Yes cheeky i know but how do they work out the duty and vat. Is it on what you pay for the car? In which case could you not simply say the car cost you half of what you paid using the receipt as proof and thus pay half the relevant fees?

not sure "cheeky" is the right word....:taped:

How much is the car? I am not sure how it is done, especially if it is bought privately...

Car is being bought privately so in theory the seller could write a reciept for the car lower than what I paid.

The car is around $30,000 so lets say £15k but to add shipping etc your looking at about another £5k for tax and vat. So I thought get a reciept for as little as possible (within reason) and then pay less for duty and vat.

A guy that works for me did something similar when he lived in the US. He sold a mustang for $5000 but on the paperwork transferred the car for $0. This meant that the buyer didn't have to pay any state tax on the purchase

might work, no idea on what they base the tax calculations on. Are there no details in the links in this thread?

Maybe speak to Jurgen about what it is calculated on when bringing cars in from Japan?

Good idea Ill try speaking to Jurgen
