tbourner
It's an 18" x 6j wheel off a jeep, a mate wants to put 255-70-18 tyres on it but I said they'd probably be too wide - not sure how the relationship with sidewall profile works though. Anyone know?

tbourner
So a 225 is the theoretical maximum. But what would happen if a 255 was put on?
merckx
So a 225 is the theoretical maximum. But what would happen if a 255 was put on? Does he realise that a 255 is 10" and his wheel is 6"? When I bought my car it had 255's on 8" rims, the result was long splits in the sidewall. not sure how the relationship with sidewall profile works though. It means that the sidewall is 70% of the tyre width - 255mm. Sidewall height is 178mm. Obviously his sidewall height is much greater than mine which reduces the problem of having tyres wider than the rim but even so 255's are far too wide. Oh, yeah, I knew that bit, but I don't know by how much a 70 profile 255 can fit on a smaller wheel than a 30 profile 255 (for example), if at all! Supra-Brett
Not sure what should go a a 6 inch wheel but i know that the correct size for an 8.5inch wheel is 235 for a 9.5 inch wheel it is 265 or 275, but i currently have 295s on a 9.5inch wheel so you can get bigger tyres on them
TrickTT
It will handle like a pig, be dangerous and he will crash at the first corner. His insurance company will not pay out and the police will arrest and charge him for driving an unroadworthy vehicle. Apart from that, it will be fine.
