Hi, I'm currently in the process of getting my license, and its coming to the stage where i have to think about what car to buy. I was thinking of getting a Toyota starlet 1.3 turbo, but im not sure if the insurance will be friendly. What do you recommend, and who would be the best company to get insured by as well? cheers

I can't get insured by sky because i need to be 19 or over, but i have been given a quote of £3821.66 by quin direct, so i think i should get something not turbo'd.

For me I would look at diesels. For instance a 1.5 citroen AX diesel is insurance group 4. In town its as nippy as all the petrol numpties in their saxo's. It does 60 to the gallon. its just as usefull as the other hatches in its group. And it will cost you knacker all to buy. One year in that car will also teach you alot about speed preservation that will last you your whole life. Corsa do a 1.7 diesel I believe and ford do a 1.8 TD fiesta (its a proper dog though). Bigger car then look at peugot 1.9 diesel 306's but the insurance will start to climb.

Want summat chick chic take a look at retro 2cv's If you can't afford oomph go for style and difference.

What car was that on?

Oh and the civic was worth about £2500 but i've always had a thing for them since I was about 13.

It was on a starlet turbo 1.3.

I was thinking of becoming an original chav and get a saxo, its cheaper than the starlet to get the car and to insure. If only insurers would trust me with a 6spd tt supra :(

But yeah i will focus on just passing my test first.

try a insurance quote on a 306 gti6, quite reasonable for 170bhp! i pay £279 a year fully comp and im only 22!... although to be honest your best bet as a a new driver is a 1.2 or something i learnt the hard way about insurance.. was on my parents for 4 years! really aint worth it! my insurance on the sup (when its on the road) will be £900 a year .. imagine the savings if i had started with a small engine car!

... however if u fancy a 306 gti-6 i will have a 2000 reg 306 GTi-6 for sale in the upcoming weeks! 60k miles fsh :eyebrows:

Those 1.3 starlets are seriously quick. Will keep up with an N/A supe as standard (not sure about top end though), and blow one away when tuned.

A friend down here in Sunny Weymouth has a 175bhp 1.3 Turbo starlet. Shes just spent a S*** load more as well so i think soon it'll break the 200bhp marker. And just to upset people it absolutely destroys N/a supras and beat most of the TT supra drag times at Santapod last yr lol

She has spent close to 6k on the engine though! :(

i've never been one for small engines since i passed my test... u should see the size of me for a start!!! 2nd car with no NCB @ 20 was my Primera GT, modified to the hilt and f/c adrian flux insured me for £1563. 7 months on i decided i wanted a supra and i'm paying £47 more, again, a fair bit done to it with everything declared. might just happen to know where there's a Primera GT going in may tho.....

thats a better start getting the saxo! jumping into a 6-spepd supra as our first car is a very bad idea. Start off small mate, you need to learn how to drive first and I really dont mean that to sound patronising in the slightest, no insurer is going to go near you at 17 on a supra and most other turbo cars. How about an escort/focus to tide you over for a few years?
