Chingy
Hi All, Got this e-mail from a friend: Number 10 Downing Street has approved a petition that was launched requesting a new public holiday falling on the Monday after Remembrance Sunday in November each year. To be known as the National Remembrance Holiday, it's got three aims: 1. To emphasise the remembrance of those servicemen and women who have given, and continue to give, their lives for Britain 2. To remind people of the importance of protecting our Nation and what it stands for; 3. To break that 3 month period between the August Public Holiday and Christmas when there are currently no long weekends, especially as the UK has fewer public holidays than most European Countries. If you agree to the idea, please sign up to the petition - it doesn't take long LINK HERE This is not just about another bank holiday, but more importantly about having a designated day to remember all those people that sacrificed their lives for our freedom. colsoop
I think it will become less about sacrificing a few minutes on your weekend remembering the sacrifice of others in to a "great i have a day off work" type thing
Al Massey
people just want the time off and do nothing the amount of people that actually come to the parades or even remember properly has gone down so much coz people dont really care and an extra day off will mean people staying in bed anyway
Chingy
People should care makes me so cross. I'm very grateful of those people who have lost there lifes, and those still in action.
CJ
meaning That your reasoning is nothing to do with the reality of "Remembrance Sunday".
Kopite
People should care makes me so cross. I'm very grateful of those people who have lost there lifes, and those still in action. Don't think it should be a national holiday because of Remembrance Sunday but I don't think people respect it as they should.
CJ
If you look at reason 3 in the original post, I think that says it all.

AndyT
It's about sacrificing a little, our time, for those that have sacrificed a lot, lives. If we have it as a bank holiday that message will be lost to even more people I'm afraid.

Totally agree with you mate, not enough people remember the fallen. As CJ summed it up couple of pasts up reason 3 shows the real reason why this petition has been compiled. Reason 3 is an insult. When I first got the e-mail I thought it would be a good reflection of Remembrance Sunday dedicated to all who have suffered or died in war including their familys. But maybe in this day and age my respect for this is not shared by jo public. Its a real shame.

As CJ summed it up couple of pasts up reason 3 shows the real reason why this petition has been compiled. Reason 3 is an insult. Yep, it's just about having another weekend where you can have an extra day on the pi$$, got nothing to do with remembering the dead. As was said, that's what Remembrance Sunday is for. Now, St. George's Day, that should be a bank holiday...
Kieran
Just to add, have any of these e-petition things ever actually got what they wanted?

As long as there are people like yourself and the members who posted here though, respect for our heroes can't be diminished.
