stew123
OK - so having spent the last 4 years saving, I've finally bought a 93 TT. Anyone know how to set up a HKS-EVC? Also, I have heard rumours that the Jap turbo's suffer from breaking ceramic turbine blades - any truth to this? And I'm afraid its a silver one! Thorin
Welcome! And congrats on the excellent choice of car. http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=5464 might help with setting up the EVC and yes ceramic blades can and do shatter. Scoboblio
Hi and welcome There's nowt wrong with a silver soop! The ceramic japanese turbos are very reliable as long as you warm up / cool down the car properly, generally failure is due to people running huge boost or incorrect maintenance (1.2 bar is generally viewed as the safe limit, they run at 0.8 standard). They will go eventually, but I've personally not heard of anyones turbos breaking simply because they're J-spec I'm sure someone will be along with a more suitable explanation soon Hope you're enjoying your new toy! Alex
Think Scoboblio covered it...they are reliable if you have a good filter stopping them injesting crap and you make sure you cool them down properly after a run. Set you EVC to no more than 1.2 bar.
Guest Usmann A
TUuning the EVC is really easy. There is a small unit inside the car which has 3 knobs on it. One says A, other says B. last one ovbioulsy power .. You have to set wanring boost value in Kpa. Then take the car out and give a good boot in 3rd/4th gear and come back and note the peak hold boost, now if you want more just adjust the dial on Knob A clockwise(be carful tho not to much) Setting B, just us Knob B. You can lock the EVC aswell. ** edited**- th abov is just my method, and only do so when I feel using full boost will not incur any damage to the motor. Stevie Boy
Quick question for the technical bods on the topic of ceramic blades, i take it the compressor blade of the turbo is ceramic on the jspecs as well as the exhaust turbine, just a little concearned that if the turbo lets go, and shatters its blades is there the possibility that bits can make their way through an intercooler, into an engine for some terminal damage??? Fifty
Hi I always thought cooling down was to prevent oil burn in the feed/bearings and has nothing to do with the blade material - I am thick? (probably) :alien: Of course I am cos the air gets cooler as well dont it; but in any case ceramic should be very stable?
stew123
Thanks for the advice on the EVC guys - I'll give it a go (when the weather clears up a bit!)... This is the first turbo car I've owned, so excuse the ignorance...I understand about the need for running the engine for a while after a good blast, but are there any "rules of thumb" I can set the timer to? Chris Wilson
Compressor blades are metallic, turbine blades are ceramic. They can still get into the engine via low pressure in the exhaust ports. The natural response to a sudden and violent loss of power is to lift off, this can cause a vac in the exhaust ports... Skylines are VERY prone to this, just done an engine rebuld on one that ate it's rear turbo. VERY expensive. Generally though the J-Spec turbos seem to last longer than the UK ones, if not abused, and certainly seem less inclined to become smokey. 1.2 bar MAX!!!! Markie
Hi guys, Anyone know some info on the Blitz boost controllers. As you dont seem to set the boost in BAR but in percentage.. 0 = Stock and mine is set at 55 (MAX 100) with a gain of 12 I think. I dont have a clue on what boost this makes it run at, but I have been hitting 1.3 BAR boost. Any ideas?
