craig l
Got a quote today for labour only for fitting a new clutch.Nearly crapped myself £1220 and thats not including oil. This is from a small independent garage who mostly deals with jap cars. This is the only place ill trust with my cars cos the guys genuine and wouldnt rip me off, is it that much of a hard job to justify all that. think ill be looking elsewhere. Oh nearly forgot its a jspec tt6.

SimonB
3-4 hours labour, tops. By the way, not sure what you mean about "not including oil". What oil?
craig l
Was meaning the gearbox oil got told it wouldnt need changing but it d be better doing anyway.
colsoop
Is that including parts ? I paid £150 for clutch and flywheel change (i supplied the parts)

craig l
Thats not including parts labour only not actually decided on a clutch yet not sure what to get.Saw ones on ebay from pro clutch and gripforce really cheap both under £200 for stage 3,need to find out whether their crap before i buy. Also considering the rps street max, im bpu but im not wanting anything to harsh its a daily driver and i dont race it. Sean1933
Thats quite cheap Col. I agree with Simon ,would say its a 3-4 hour job on a ramp max. I have done it a few times on axle stands and it took me nearer 5-6 but thats with beer breaks and being stuck with a g/box resting on your chest...its not fun doing it that way i can tell you! You dont need the fluid changing, but might aswell do it whilst the box is out if its not been done for a long time...or you dont know when it was last done. Clutch wise i would go with either stock, CW special , RPS would be ok, or Centreforce which are quite cheap and alot of people are having good results with them. craig l
Taking the piss is what i shouldve said when they gave me the price lol. ill def be shopping around might even try toyota.
Flip
£180 from ToyotaGT - cheapest I found, and when my Centerforce arrives I shall be going there for clutch, service, cam belt, dot 5.1 change, and a few other bits and bobs - hmmm, that'll be a cheap day out. SimonB
I once had my clutch fail when I was almost outside my local Toyota, so I limped in and asked them to have a look. More so I could leave it there for a couple of days while I sorted getting it moved! They gave me a line about "that being an engine out job" and quoted 12 hours labour at £85 per hour plus VAT! Obviously I didn't take them up on that one! What a bunch of numpties...
craig l
Just as a matter of interest what kind of gearbox oil do you need how many litres per change and how much is it cos im sure toyota and most garages wont stock it or will they? supra dan
i had mine done at checkpoint in arbroath, was about £150 to change the clutch and flywheel. if i were you i would stay with a stock clutch, i had an RPS street clutch and it only lasted 3000 miles. swapped it for a new stock one and not had any more problems
supra dan
you should get 2 liters of Toyota V160 oil but its hard to come by. do a search there is load of info about gearbox oil
craig l
Was gonna try checkpoint heard good things about them.Is the stock clutch ok for a bpu car though, i might decide to race it a few times at crail in the future dont want to wreck the clutch, thats the reason i want slightly uprated one. Also should i replace flywheel the same time as the clutch.
supra dan
i raced mine at crail, must have done at least a dozen passes on the stock clutch that was in when i bought the car. changed to the RPS and only dragged it once and it was smoking. dont drag it anymore as it was getting expensive my car is BPU+ if you plan to race alot i would get a clutch that is upto it, the RPS isnt IMHO. i changed the flywheel just for peace of mind
steb9780
I paid a bit less than what you have been quoted to have it done by CW. That included his own modified clutch, new flywheel, some gearbox seals replaced, new release bearing etc. Oh and a first de-cat too.
steb9780
Oh sorry forgot to say, as a guideline I think Chris charges £150 for a straight clutch change for the labour.

Half of them use the standard Toyota disc with a modified clutch plate, so it's not going to be any worse than standard.

Jake
I think you must have misheard them mate. 3x hours @ £40/hr = £120 not £1200
Mike M
Think i was about 200 notes from Hypertech for clutch, flywheel and new gearbox seals plus a couple of litres of Fuchs titan ATF 3000 stuff thats been spot on in my getrag box so far. Mine was all stock and cant say enough about the difference a new stock flywheel makes to the feel and sound of the car.
