dangerous brain
Is it just the internet is slow? If its the pc itself is your virus scanner doing its thing at that time? If its just the net maybe someone on your street is using huge bandwidth at those times, remember ADSL is shared between maybe 20 people.

Marco
I used to have internet slow downs in the evenings. In the afternoons it was always really fast. I couldnt figure out why... untill I realised it was the little 14" tv on my desk that interfered with my wireless connection!

michael
The PC isn't doing anything like a full virus scan on the whole drive at that time or a scheduled defrag is it?

dangerous brain
Do a decent virus scan first and se eif anything is amiss. If it was permanently slow I'd say a process is messed up. The fact its time related would have me suspecting a virus of some sort. Pull the plug on your modem and internet connection and do a virus scan see if that finds anything. caliAl
When it is running slow, open Task Manager and check which processes are consuming your resources.
dangerous brain
The process may only be running at 8pm to 10pm though. Its worth looking at running process's for sure but unless you know what they all mean that isn't going to tell you much apart from processes are running. msconfig after a virus scan and disable all processes at startup then enabling one by one would be a better way to alienate the dodgy process should a virus scan come up with nothing. Run task Manager when the PC is running slow. Finding out the process information is easy. For example if a process named scan32.exe is running 100% cpu, you could take a guess that it maybe your AV. If the process name does not help you out then Google the process name and I'm sure you will find out all the information you need. Also check hard drive activity. You might have something that’s heavily read/writing to your hard drive. You can use the Performance tool in Windows Admin tools to help resolve this. Metallikev
Sounds to me like its checking for windows/office updates, we get this alot on our pc at work (i'm an it tech) svchost will be taking up alot of the pc's time, once it checkes for updates it should work fine and normal. However should only take a short time unless it actually finds updates which should be released on the 2nd tuesday of every month from Microsoft, not every day. Like said above trend should clean up any virus' and malware, otherwise try using a registry cleaner, that speeds things up no end, one i use sometimes is Abexo as they have a free one
