AndyT
Hi folks. Word is out the Gov. (Bless) are introducing a 38 decibel limit for cars. The test will be at idle, standing. No info. as to what distance from the car yet but expect a metre. Comparisons - Normal conversation = 60 dBA. Lorry at town speed and 7 metres - 100 dBA. Busy pub - 110 dBA. Health and Safety rules require employees to wear protectors at 85 dBA. Looks like we're gonna be needing more noise info for our cars and exhausts pretty soon. Daston
think that may be for cars from a certain year. Dont think they are going to call off all the TVR's etc and they are standard!

Not heard of that but if they do it definatly wont be retrospective!! it will be a new manufactorers guideline, much like crash safety and emissions is on newer vehicles. You wouldnt expect people with Mini's to have to meet new crash test regulations would you! lol
Pete
LOL - I think the Tiger runs at 112 dBA. I struggled to get it down to 104 (?) for the SVA test.
Al Massey
they can take a running jump if they think they will enforce it on me lol that just sounds stupid

AndyT
The thing I was worried about, for the loud guys / gals of course, is whether plod will be issued meters for spot checks. ie more money laundering off the motorist. I hope not.
ivan
It is bound to only apply retrospectively. Imagine all those rich Ferrari drivers kicking up a stink.
SimonB
Sounds like a typical urban myth to me, 38dB is about the same noise level as a fairly quiet PC. No way that could ever be applied to cars.

No way that could ever be applied to cars. You say that, but I was stood next to my Supra chatting to one of the security guards at work just before Christmas. After about 15 mins I just got in and started to pull away. He was shocked as he hadn't realised she was running right next to him. Granted I've still got a stock exhaust system, but it's ridiculously quiet. My Corsa makes more noise on idle!

Whitesupraboy2
This will never happen; http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/carreviews/grouptests/210612/mazda_3.html This car is currently one of the quietest about for an average sized engine car and is 52db outside the car and 38db in the car. It just wont be possible for many years to get the noise down and performance up, they will force the emissions thing first.
