Does anybody know or have any information on getting a kit car through an SVA.

Really want to study what is allowed first before doing something that wouldn't pass.

Silly questions like, is there a minimum throw length on gear levels.

I would think Pete may be able to help. :)

It's been 4 years since I did this and the rules do change a little from time to time.

As long as you can drive around the test centre they're not interested in your gears other than if your knob has sharp bits on it.

The hardest parts I had were getting the emissions down on my badly tuned Pinto, the exhaust was too noisy and plenty of sharp bits to hurt poor pedestrians. (Like they'd be worried how rounded the headlamp was just as it was ripping into their legs).

The measure all seat belt mounting heights, lights all have to be visible from certain angles, rear view mirrors must be able to see (a rather large) angle behind you.

Nothing should fall off during the test.. :innocent:

WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THE TEST?

As follows: Anti-theft, demisting, wipers, seats, seat-belts, interior projections, radio suppression, glass, lighting, mirrors, tyres, doors, exterior, steering, design and construction, brakes, noise, emissions, projections, speedometer and weights.

Anti-theft devices – An item such as a battery "kill" switch will do.

Defrosting – Must be fitted with as system capable of giving the driver an adequate view ahead. Ducted heater air or embedded electric elements are both acceptable.

Wipers – Must move automatically. Must park so as not to obstruct driver’s view.

Seats – Must be firmly fixed.

Seat belts – Must be fitted with required number of anchorage points and be located at the correct height.

Interior – Must have no sharp or protruding edges.

Radio suppression – Must have suppression fitted.

Glass – Windows must be made of safety glass and of a recognised standard and marked by the manufacturer NOT by a glass agent.

Lights – Obligatory lights must be in the required positions, right colours and intensity and visible from required angles. Must not be sited below minimum height.

Mirrors - Checks for positions, and field of vision.

Tyres - Speed and load rating must be correct and must be "E" marked.

Doors etc - Must be capable of being securely latched with a 2-stage latch.

Exterior - Between floor and a height of 2 meters nothing must catch or risk injury to any person who could come into contact with the vehicle. Projections are dealt with here.

Design & Construction – Deals with all aspects of design safety and ensures that no danger is caused to any vehicle occupants or other road users.

Brakes - Vehicle must conform to listed operations, five tests are performed with ever increasing pedal pressure on the front and then the rear wheels.

Noise - Checks that exhaust system is complete a silencer is fitted and that 101db is not exceeded.

Emissions - Checked via an approved and calibrated exhaust gas analyser.

Speedometer - Checks accuracy of speedo within defined limits. If all speedometer related parts come from a single donor, this part of test not carried out.

Weights - Checks maximum gross weight and max permitted axle weights are not less then weights calculated using kerbside weights and passenger weight

A full SVA manual is available at a cost of £35 including P&P from –

You can get around things like not installing a windscreen. That means no test of wipers and demister. Cover everything in 'permanent' covering - You should see the amount of crap I pulled off the car once it passed! Loads of bits of rubber and shite.

It's a complete farse really as on mine all the mirrors, indicators, exhaust and various other items were altered afterwards. Fine for MOT.

What kit are you building?

All the parts that Tiger supplied were supposed to be SVA compliant...but weren't.

If you're building something obscure give the SVA manual a very thorough read before raising any spanners.

It's very rare to pass first time and they'll always find something to whine about...just fix it and retest.

This is the thing.

The front 1/3, ie suspension and frame will be based on the Locost chassis design. The rear 1/3 is going to be a plate system holding a cbr900 swingarm and engine. The middle 1/3 is simply a ladder frame to act as the area to fix the seats to.

The body and upper panel section will be created to meet SVA requirements. (That is the tricky part)
