CJ
I currently have a trial version of Iolo System Mechanic that runs out in about 3 weeks. What are peoples opinions on this type of software? A good investment or waste of money? If a good investment, what are the better ones out there?
BASHTHEBISHOP
I currently use a mixture of Threat Fire & AVAST. These are two superb bits of free software.
CJ
I currently use a mixture of Threat Fire & AVAST. These are two superb bits of free software. Aren't they more anti spyware though? Whereas System Mechanic looks at the performance of the system including missing start up, registry problems etc.
BASHTHEBISHOP
Threat fire is anti-spyware & Avast is anti-virus. TBH - for the amount of times you may get bootup/registry issues i wouldnt waste money on them. I have used one i think called Tweaknow registry cleaner but have only needed a registry fix a couple of times on a PC thats 3yrs+ old.
wHIZz
I've only just realised we're talking about PC software here.... initially I thought the thread was some sort of car diagnostics software query As for system mechanic, never really found the need to use these types of packages really, and I were going to so I would certainly look at he open souce stuff first before buying a COTS product. wHIZz
AndyT
I run Sys Mech 6 regularly. Great software, put together by professionals. I use 6 because they're going like McaFee and asking for subscription now. However, the product does shine and I may well get 7. It doesn't slow the computer down and has no issues like the big two. Sys Mech are more optimiser than protection. However I would trust their judgement going for the protection software. Not a brilliant recommendation I know but hey no one knows it all. I have just found a very cheap version of 6 on the interwebnet and may just give that a go.

Very cheap = £10 - £20 Or I could supply you with a working copy + professional usage notes from programmers for sod all. It was actually about £300 worth of software put together by p'eed off pro's. They then turned into a product, as one would.

AndyT
If I buy here, it is just $40. Good deal? That's about half the price I see it for CJ. Also 7 seems to be attached to subscription now as well. So, absolute bargain. Link copied and thanks to you too. No way you were gonna be beaten on price, what was I thinking. Lol. Tee from China
I bought SM Version 5 about 3 years ago and have no problems with it and find it can detect somethings other programs don't, recently had a free upgrade to V5.5. I also use Avast,AdAware and Spyware Doctor as well as Yahoo Anti Spy which all work with each other without conflict and have updates available
