gaz1
ok i still after many years am not sure what they are, where they go, and are they included in turbo kits:rolleyes: anyone have an idea, just trying to work out if i have one for my new turbo system, and if i need one
JamieP
Small peice of pipe that conects to the wastegate, you will have one in your new kit id imagine:)
supradibbs
ok i still after many years am not sure what they are, where they go, and are they included in turbo kits:rolleyes: anyone have an idea, just trying to work out if i have one for my new turbo system, and if i need one Included with the BL kit mate evacuates air outta the wastegate whilst on boost hope that makes sense not too good at explaining things
Pig
Your new kit will come with one. Waaaay too slow
Daston
Same as what others have said really. However some people conect them to the exahust so they dont make too much noise and scare old ladies
gaz1
i had it in my head that it is a hard pipe that slides into the downpipe, or am i just being silly:rolleyes:
JamieP
i had it in my head that it is a hard pipe that slides into the downpipe, or am i just being silly:rolleyes: It vents from the wastegate while on boost, you can have it conected back into the downpipe if you want to keep the noise down for track days etc, i think some of the HKS hits come like this. kieren1234
i had it in my head that it is a hard pipe that slides into the downpipe, or am i just being silly:rolleyes: No your not being silly. Some people do recirculate the screamer pipe back into the exhaust/downpipe. It is basibally a really thin exhaust that carries exhaust gasses away from the opening of the wastegate when it is open. miko_supra
what are mot places like on emissions with this?
TLicense
In laymans terms, when the engine is offboost, or the turbo is spooling, then the wastegate will be shut and the exhaust gas will be flowing through the turbo and into the exhaust. As the turbo get's up to speed, and you achieve enough boost to open the wastegate, then the exhaust flow no-longer flows through the turbo (or rather the amount of exhaust flow through the turbo is reduced by bleeding some of it off through the wastegate). As the exhaust gas going through the wastegate needs to go somewhere, there's one of 2 things you can do. 1. Have a screamer pipe. It's a pipe attached to the wastegate on one end, and usually open ended on the other, which just kinda points the exhaust gas going through the wastegate somewhere under the engine where its' less likely to melt something. As the name suggests, a screamer pipe is going to be LOUD, as you've basically not got any silencer, or any real exhaust at all to speak of. Imagine running your car with no manifold. It's nearly as loud as that. 2. The other option is to re-route the exhaust gas coming out of the wastegate back into the exhaust. This up-side of this is it's less likely to cause melting problems, but it's significantly more difficult to set-up. It's also quieter, which some see as a good thing, and some see as bad. TLicense
what are mot places like on emissions with this? They won't be able to put the engine under enough load to open the wastegate, so it shouldn't ever be a problem.
miko_supra
so when the waste gate opens is that when you hear that really loud rushing/sucking (whoosh) sound? or is it literally like taking half the exhaust system off all of a sudden?
TLicense
The whoosh sound will be a combination of the turbo's sucking air in through the induction and the wastegate opening, which is as you describe like taking half the exhaust off. Gazboy
The loudest screamer I ever heard was a RUF 911, watching that thing go past at 200mph sounded like a jet fighter hooning along a runway.
tooquicktostop
I have a screamer pipe fitted to my HKS system and it vents out to the atmosphere and not down the exhaust, great sound when on full chat, also makes some interesting marks on the floor of a rolling road ! Chris Wilson
I couldn't live with mine; had to re-plumb And very neatly, too, the exhaust is one of the best fits for such a monster pipe size I have seen.
mikeyb10supra
I have a cast manifold kit and prototype arnout made including a flexi section that plumbs the exit for the gate back into the downpipe....looks like a perfect fit as well, very well made
TurboBrett
if you want the quietness of the re-plumbed 'screemer' AND the loudness of the open to air screem you could always use one (or a couple) of them exhaust valve things;) and have it(them) on a switch Clicky EDIT: lol i didnt mean to find one relating to the supra either this is more what i was thinking off Clicky
Supra Pilot
The Waste gate exhaust when vented to atmosphere is called a 'screamer pipe'. (hence the name) When it is plumbed back into the Exhaust system it is not a screamer pipe!
GazzaGSi
Mine was fitted with a screamer. I luv'd it! Sounded awesome (if you like that sort of thing) Need to be carful it doesnt foul on the stearing nuckle though.
