Pot
Figured I'd ask the question as I've just found out my account's been throttled by the already useless people at Virgin.net to a level that's not even worth bothering with, less than 1kb/s at the moment... How much do you guys use on average? According to them last week I was 7gb down, 1gb up... I can account for 1.5gb I DL'd in 'video media' - But apart from that I was just on PKR and XBox live mainly, which I didn't think would use that much?... (Plus the rubbish speeds I get here suprises me I'd get to that amount) ((Their limit to get on the naughty list is 3gb a week))... Anyhow, guess I'll be back after midnight when the naughty list doesn't apply... It'll give me time to find a way to get rid of them thanks to the hassles I've already had with them... Pot
Just thought to add some substance, what ISP's do you recommend?... I've always valued Cable, but sadly can't get it here, wouldn't have moved here if I knew I was going to have such rubbish speeds as I do (2mb is good but rare)... JamesG
I don't know the virgin.net tariffs but you must be on a cheap one if you are only allowed 3Gb per week. I use 100Gb+ per month just on newsgroup access. A single hi-def movie can be over 10Gb. I'm on virgin media cable (previously NTL) and they now throttle me in the evening from 20Mbits/sec down to 5Mbits/sec once I've downloaded 3Gb (then resets the limit after 4 hours I think). A bit harsh when I'm paying 37quid/month for it.

The issue I've got is the same as you, as they've throttled me between 4pm and 12am, only the level they've throttled me to is even less than dial-up - Thinking about it, I did DL the HD Version of 300 this week via XBox Live, that was 5.1gb in itself (For the 720px version)... EDIT : The lists last for a week, reset at midnight on Sunday night (The customer support chap 'thinks' that's the day, however I think he might be wrong as I was fine on Wednesday evening)... robin
3GB in a week is nothing. Some of these "unlimited" tariffs are disgusting. I have never recorded my useage over a long period but I am guessing its quite alot. sometimes I will download over 10GB a day. Other days not alot. The Restorer
My dads with Metronet pay as you go. 419MB a MONTH. Needless to say he always goes over!
Pot
I've just spoken to a solicitor about breaking the contract with them (I've been with them for less than 12 months), as there's other issues with them, namely them taking direct debits when they seem to want to, and never ever sending me a bill (Took ages for them to say they only send bills to your virgin/net e-mail address, and not by post (Which I was told I'd receive when I started) but upon checking the virgin.net e-mail, nothing was sent their either...), not refunding calls to their 0906 Tech Support number when it's their problem (Which they promise to do), supplying faulty kit (The router I got when I joined), Lying to me in Tech support (Some phone jockey telling me things that are wrong, and insisting on them, and that he knows best as he works in their tech call centre, without knowing I work in IT myself...), and not even getting close to the 'up to' 8mb service, which it seems the 'up to' is losing all of the weight it had with the courts nowadays EDIT : I suspect there's an underlying issue here, on top of being throttled... Surely being throttled wouldn't give a ping like this...

Pot
My rather slow (up to 8mbps) is coming through at 1.5 mbps. You gotta get rid of them bud. That's just rubbish. I'm working on doing that - I'd love to hit a constant 2mb or even 1.5mb as long as it's regular, now and again I get up to 3.5, but it's rare, now I've phoned them again to question the ping, and a rather free speaking chap (Who I guess doesn't care about his job), told me the best thing I can do is leave and sue them if they try to come after me, I get the feeling he's fed up of people phoning up and being arsy (As we would be) about the same issue constantly... I've got the draft letter from my solicitor typed up, so it'll get into the post tomorrow, it does have a paragraph about me not being billed, and isn't the most comprehensive letter as he was the duty on call chap, and had to dictate it to me over the phone (I had to remind him I don't do shorthand a couple of times), but I'll attach it so you can use it too if you want (I think I can handle a 1kb upload lol)... Konrad
Have no problems at all, I'm on 4Mbit connection from Virgin. Before I had 2 Mbits and always got full speed. Todays score CAN be little lower, because I'm in LAN and guys was doing something on other 4 computers. Accoriding to data from my router, last 2 days we dl'ed 5 GB and uploaded 1 GB. Pot
BT Used to mess me about with billing, but that was a fair few years ago, my 'rents use them, and swear by them, but they might not be as 'net intensive' as us (Mum uses it to connect to work, and Dad just looks up our family history and info on some railway station he wants to rebuild), but when I've been up there (Which has been a fair few times when my connection's dropped here) - It's always been a constant 2mb (He's paying for 8, but is the type of fella to be happy with something, 8 would be too much for what he needs)...
Konrad
I would say that 5 GB/2 days is fairly intensive eh Considering, that house is empty for 3/4 day

(Also try the London one even if Maidenhead is yellow, you should get a faster speed on that) EDIT : Now I'm suddenly up to this: So that's nearly at old broadband speeds!... lol
JamesG
Try this test and see if it's any faster: http://www.giganews.com/performance.html I get wildly differing results from speedtest.net depending on which server I connect to. None of them come close to my actual transfer rate.
Pot
It's not I'm afraid, but representative of how the service goes up and down, earlier I was up to nearly half a mb, but now I'm back down... Hopefully after midnight the throttling will be turned off (That's the cutoff point, or so they say, the bastards...) Results attached... EDIT : I did cancel the 2nd one part way through as you can see, but it wasn't getting any better...
Konrad
I wouldn;t say it is virgin mate. Something is definatelly wrong with the signal in your place. Scores like this are worse then dial-up modem ones. Do you have filter between cable modem and virginmedia box? Are you sure your modem is not packing up? When was last time you got near max speed? Was something changed recently? (moving modem, changing socket etc). Also ping is terrible, it shouldn't be like this. What router they delivered? I'm just using their modem and after that I have my own 3Com cable router to split connection between 5 computers.
ivan
I'm on NTL 4MG here too. Speed seems to be OK at the moment: Luckily I don't download enough to trigger their throttling system - I start all mine after midnight when they're not bothered. SatSport
think Pot is on bt lines not cable?? Same lousy performance here as well. Was with NTL on a steady 1mb connection, i`m out in the country 7kms from the exchange, so when Virgin bought over ntl they put me on this `up to 8Mb` connection. First 10 days were okish, up to 2mb and was satisfied enough, now it`s dial-up speeds one moment and up to 400kb the next, will take a copy of that letter mate:D
Pot
think Pot is on bt lines not cable?? Yes I am, Virgin.net (As I put earlier), is the ADSL side of Virgin Media, like the ugly little sister... lol Seems now the throttling's been turned off as it's now : (Attached) EDIT From speedtest.net : Thanks to their other hassle (One of my posts above), this is the final straw, so I will be getting rid of them, hopefully It's sad that on an 8mb package, I'm happy to be getting 2-3mb (And yes I know the issues with ADSL lines)
redtwinturbo
I am on virgin media cable and its all over the place, it's meant to be 20mb (£37/month) which you might see once in a blue moon, the rest of the time it can be anywhere between 1mb and 10mb. It makes no sense, we can find no pattern whatsoever. The house has been empty over xmas for 2+ weeks and I went back to find D/L of 3meg yesterday as soon as I turned the computer on. So can't be fair useage? Everything was fine when it used to be Telewest - constant 10mb.
