supRo
Hi, I have had EBC standard discs on the rear of my Jap TT with Green stuff pads. Everything was fine for about 3 weeks but now I get a grinding noise (passenger side) which is more or less constant even from cold start. Noise increases when I apply the brakes. I took it back to the garage who took the wheel off and confirmed the noise (When driving the car). They couldn't see anything wrong with it and said not to worry about it. Has anyone else had a similar problem? Could it be the wheel bearings or any of the drive train components? The garage said it may be due to the harder pads? Please help. Thanks, Ro
paul mac
have you got standard j-spec rear brakes as these are notorious for sticking, mine went on the passenger side, take the car for a spin nothing dramatic just sensible driving then feel how hot the disks are my drivers side was warm to the touch and the passenger side, well there was the smell of burning flesh and a lot of swearing

supRo
Hi, They are standard discs manufactured by EBC with EBC Greenstuff pads. The noise isn't actually there all the time but it does sound like metal to metal grinding also there's no visible score marks. I'll check tonight to for excessive heat coming out. Cheers, Ro
hadyn
Did you sort this out Supro? I've got a nasty grinding noise coming from my passenger rear when I brake. New rear pads havent sorted it either
supRo
Hey Hadyn, Mines was the handbrake shoes falling apart and grinding inside the rear disc bell bit. It's possible that it'll be your handbrake shoes or their springs. I think they come as a kit together. Does the noise change when you drive slowly and lift the handbrake slightly? If you remove the rear discs you should easily see if they are the culprit, look for the scorch marks too. Ro
hadyn
Well i did notice that the rear disc on the passenger side seem to be making a grating noise as i turned it with the wheel off today. Possibly warped disc rubbing against the calipher?
supRo
I wouldn't have thought that discs can touch the calipers even if they are warped, especially with new pads but I could be wrong.
hadyn
handbrake shoes then? im thinking its warped causing the disc to be kinked out and touch the calipher?
supRo
I reckon it's the handbrake shoes/springs. Can anyone else confirm that they have experienced rear discs warping and touching calipers?
hadyn
I've got what I think is scorch marks on the outside of the disc as its a browny/rusty colour compared to the 'shininess' of my front discs. Gonna change my front pads 2moro in the vain hope that this may stop it before inspecting the handbrake shoes/springs
supRo
I thought the noise is at the back? If the noise is from the front then yes, probably worn pads and the metal indicator bit ion the pads is touching, where the scorchmark is
hadyn
The noise does seem to be coming from the back. I can hear it loudly when I press on the brakes at low speeds which got me initially thinking it was pads. I think I can also hear a light grinding/scraping noise at low speeds with the brakes off, but this might just be my imagination
Todd
It's possible that it'll be your handbrake shoes or their springs. I think they come as a kit together. I got a set from MR.T earlier in the year and they do not come as a kit.

hadyn
You heard the grinding noise under braking and it was your wheel bearing?
supRo
This is the 'kit' that I ordered - shoes and springs 46540-50010 X 2 46590-50010 X 1 46550-50010 X
Todd
You heard the grinding noise under braking and it was your wheel bearing? No........I had a noise coming from the rear of the car and was convinced it was brakes, overhauled calipers, new pads the lot and noise still there. Bought pads thinking it was the last thing in the area of the noise not changed but after jacking car up thought I would check for play in bearing........BINGO! hadyn
Looks like it was front brake pads in my case. Changed the fronts for Toyota OEM today and was shocked to see no meat on one pad at all!!
Need4Speed
You can't warp a disc so it touches the caliper.
