Snooze
I am 100% a non believer... But what I don't get is how the "Big Bang" happened. To have a big bang there must have been something before it...it is a cycle, Universe expands then cools shrinks and returns to the big bang? But what happened before that cycle?? Where did the Universe come from? I expect the answer is it's been there "forever" but my head has a problem with infinity...I just can't my head round something just "being".... It's a good question. It's like the universe has a finite size - it has been expanding at a fixed rate since the (alleged!) big bang. So what is outside it? There was the whole cyclic theory around which helped, to an extent, me get my head around the universe existing for an infinite amount of time into the future. But that theory was disproved recently as some astronomers have proved that the universe is expanding quicker now than ever before. So what's it expanding into? "I don't know if I believe in God or not." Is an odd wording - it sounds like, at heart, one must either believe in God or not, but they just don't know yet. Whereas although I don't believe in God, I don't know for 100% certain that He doesn't exist. (I also don't particularly care whether He exists or not to be honest! - if He really exists, he doesn't appear to give a toss about me, so why should I reciprocate? ) I am a devout agnostic. Gotta agree with that. The idea of a supreme being deciding how my life is going to happen is absurd IMO. Being an engineer too, there is too much science around in the modern world for me to believe it. But, if someone came to me with incontrovertible proof that there was a God, I'd happily accept it. Seeing as no-one can do that, I'll sit on the fence

Carl_S
I think the term 'believe' is a bit misleading as it infers some doubt in whether God exists or not. For example I don't believe in my Supra. I know it exists. I can see it outside, touch it & drive it. To believe shows there is no proof, just a feeling or a wish for it to be true. My kids believe in father christmas, but we all know he doesn't exist! Neat idea. Never thought of it like that. The word "believe" being loaded. Carl_S
Probably lots of little insignificant bangs that achieved nothing Seriously, though. It's right that physics looks at these questions, and then tell the masses. But should we really concern ourselves with it - what was before the big bang? Even now I'm thinking, either you believe in God or you Don't. Big deal. We all need to live and deal with life. It's as hard as it is for belivers as it is for non-believers. Sooner or later you ahve to deal with reality.

tbourner
But that theory was disproved recently as some astronomers have proved that the universe is expanding quicker now than ever before. How? I'm sure we'd only be measuring this particular cycle, there's no way we could possibly gather any information on the previous cycles before 'this' big bang!! But what I don't get is how the "Big Bang" happened. To have a big bang there must have been something before it...is it a cycle, Universe expands then cools shrinks and returns to the big bang? But what happened before that cycle?? Where did the Universe come from? I expect the answer is it's been there "forever" but my head has a problem with infinity...I just can't my head round something just "being".... The creator created it. The creator being an Nth dimensional being (where N>4). It's a good question. It's like the universe has a finite size - it has been expanding at a fixed rate since the (alleged!) big bang. So what is outside it? Exactly - *nothing* is the answer, well what's nothing like? Does it have laws of physics? Do you just disappear if you enter it? WTF!? I thought the big bang was just to do with the matter that makes up our galaxies? So it could be expanding 'into' the universe - which is infinite. And BTW it's not actually infinite in our size terms, the best way we could comprehend it is it's circular in some way (like a donut), but it's infinite in that it's part of an Mth dimensional plane that we are caught up in (where M>all other dimensions). As we don't know what or how the higher dimensions work, we have no way to even guess how our 4th dimensional lives interact with it. Carl_S
done mean to offend BUT I DONT BELIEVE IN FAIRY TALES Most people do. Most of the words population believes in a divine creator. Maybe even our own prime minister believes in this, what you call fairy tales, which is otherwise know as mainstream religions. I still don't. But I'm ok with that. Carl_S
Any one read the book timeline? Thats a darn good read. Like the sciency stuff in it. JustGav is onto what I used to think about it. Now I'm just not sure, I have seen paranormal things. And have had friends that seen even stranger. It's an area that I would like to look into. But, where the hell do you start?

All the multi-dimensional (10 or 11, AFAIrecall) suggestions like superstring theory and M-theory have zero grounding in observed experiments. In essence, there's no more proof that string theory is true than if God exists!!!
