No, but it looks like we're becoming a NetApp reseller. :D

 

The netapp stuff is good Pete, if you need any info on it, let me know. See if you can find the NetApp Simulator (runs under vmware) and will let you play with the admin tools.

I have a 3510 array with 3 raid 5 LDs and 1 global spare, LD2 has an error but as its raid 5 the data is still ok.

 

We reseated the BAD disk in the LD which rescanned and was ok but for some reason neither this disk or the global spare have attempted to add to the LD.

 

The BAD disk has now been configured as a 2nd global spare but it still shows up as a BAD disk in LD2.

 

I have posted on the SUN forums but no one has replied :(

 

EDIT: i can post the raid screens if you want to see what i am talking about.

I follow where you are going with that. Are you saying the disk came up as bad, but then after moving it settled back down again. In my experience, once a disk gets flagged they very rarely work reliably again. A flag is usually thrown in the firmware of the disk. (Sort of like SMART).

 

Also, have you added the disk to pool again, it will need to put a signature on the disk to say what's role is.

 

Pop up the screens though. I'll dig out some of my Storedge info that I have somewhere.

We've sold a few units in the last year and they've approached us asking if we'd like to move up the chain..which is nice.

We have 3 raid 5 logical drives.

We reseated the disk and it scanned ok, we then added it as a global spare but the failed raid 5 set is not taking it. There are now 2 global spares in the array. As you can see the bad disk has the same id as one of the global spares and we cant clear its bad status.

Its only showing up as BAD in the LD though, not when you view all scsi disks globally.

 

I think I need to issue a rebuild on the LD but have been unable to confirm this is case, I would also need to confirm that the rebuild doesnt lose any data.

I think the LD just needs a rebuild but I cant try this until I shift the service onto another node.

 

Looking through some docs it would appear that when a disk fails and a global spare is used, a rebuild happens automatically, I think the issue here is that our rebuild priorty is low and therefore not starting.

Let me see if I can find my netapp login, and download the simulator, beena while since I've used it. Failing that I'll call one of the account managers I know and get a login. Give me a few days, but remind me :)
