trooper
Can anyone give a little advice? I heard that the XBox 360 was prone to dying but I wonder if this problem is sorted now. Also the Arcade version is just 190 quid. Is it worth aying the extra for the Premium or the Elite??? Cheers
Whitesupraboy2
Yes it is sorted, if you get the 175watt one. This is printed on the box by the bar code, if you get the 203watt one there is a higher chance it will overheat. However I bought an additional fan to go on the back that is powered via the USB to be extra safe as I have the 203watt version. I play it for 2 or 3 hours most days Ohh and get the premium, you'll want the harddrive for game saves and game updates. You can get the elite if your going to download HD movies but even then you dont really need it.
R3DG3CKO ROB
I've got the Elite and it's awesome you've got the added bonus of the massive hard disk (gonna be needed in the future) plus the hdmi input. The old problems of overheating and crashing have apparently been fixed with 'version 2' of the standard 360 too.
D8MOA
i have the elite...... the nads
SteamAhead
Yep, the Elite is a great machine. On it every day had with no problems. Whe i first bought it, I had it in the TV cabinet (bad idea!!!!!!) within 30mins it was so hot I could not touch it. It's now outside the unit and runs really cool, even after many hours of play Jim
trooper
OK, looks like I'll get the Elite. Why? I like the colour :-)
lust2luv
You want the 3rd generation 'Falcon' chipset if you want to avoid overheating issues. There's a way of checking this by shining a torch into the unit that's pretty easy to find on the net. As said above the 175W units should all be Falcons, but so should most units with 203W on the box these days (mine is, bought at xmas), so long as you don't buy from somewhere who may have had stock sitting on the shelves for months. The Premium has a HDMI port as well these days. Gamestation seem to do the best bundle deals. HTH
JamesC
I've got a core and just checked next to the serial number and couldn't see any sign of wattage. I've also got a hard disk on mine, what are the other differences between the core and the premium? Does it still do HD?
Whitesupraboy2
Its the Serial number on the box, also can look on the power unit itself itself as that should say the wattage. If its 203watt as said there is a small chance that it is a falcon. 175watt is easiest way to guarntee it is though. Whens your manufacture date? Otherwise as said you can shine a torch in bottom and look at heatsinks.
JamesC
Bugger mines a 203w Manufacture date is 2007-02-07.
Whitesupraboy2
I cant rememeber if its in american date format or not, If thats from febuary then no chance its a falcon. If its from July slim chance. I bought mine in October and mine isnt a Falcon
JustGav
I got one from a member here (and it wasn't his fault at ALL), but it went to the 3 red lights after a month, MS swopped it. Part of the advice I was given was to buy one of those £15 fan trays that clips on the back and to lay the xbox horizontal. Not had an issue with it since. Well chuffed. trooper
Is it not possible to save games with the Arcade model then?
R3DG3CKO ROB
I might just point out that I'm sad and have played my Elite for 5 or 6 hours straight on several occasions with no heat issues It's still just as noisy as the standard ones though... sounds like a coffee percolater when running from disk... Pabs
When I get one I'll be going for the Elite because of the HDMI connectivity - may as well get the most out of the unit and graphics
R3DG3CKO ROB
you get the hdmi on the new (version 2) premium consoles as well as the elite...
Pabs
you get the hdmi on the new (version 2) premium consoles as well as the elite... really??? Ohhhh might have to take a look at one of those instead then!
Whitesupraboy2
yep thats the one I have, Im not sure if you can save directly on the core version but if you can it wont be many games as they do a memory card for it to save games on. Also you may need to download game updates to play online and these can take up alot of space.
R3DG3CKO ROB
really??? Ohhhh might have to take a look at one of those instead then! The Elite does look the best though Yep, I've had massive game updates for every game I've played online so far, I'll check tonight and see how much space has been used... Apparently the game updates are only going to get larger so you'll need the larger HD space if you want to play online in the future... R3DG3CKO ROB
The Wii is very overrated if you ask me... Everyone I know who bought one has now sold it or given it to a family member. I'd try and borrow one for a couple of weeks as it's got a great novelty value but very short lifespan...
VIL
The Wii is very overrated if you ask me... Everyone I know who bought one has now sold it or given it to a family member. I'd try and borrow one for a couple of weeks as it's got a great novelty value but very short lifespan... Agree.. the Wii is fine for about 20 minutes but once over the novelty is only useful if you have little kids or have partys when everyone is plastered! I gave mine away....its not a games machine like the 360 or PS3. Although back to the main thread, I would be cautious of getting the 360 over the ps3. I love them both so have no axe to grind. Assuming the problem with the 360 is fixed (my mate is now on his 5th Xbox!!) there is the war over HD DVD and Blu-ray. On reading recent articles many people believe that Blu-ray is the victor and HD DVD will fizzle out! This then might be worth considering the PS3 as its still one of if not the cheapest Blu-ray player out there!
colsoop
I have the later gen premium version. I have played it for 5 or 6 hours straight and had no issues, it also came with HDMI port.
