Rob
I don't see the issues people have, it's really odd, it's just nature at the end of the day. We're the strongest species on the planet (the only one with 'real' intelligence), yet we don't put ourselves up as gods (well some of us do), and -unlike most other carnivores- we actually treat our prey very humanely, stunning it before we slit it's throat. All the animal knows is it's been walked into a building, then WHACK it's out cold and it knows nothing after this. Compare that to being chased by a female tiger, till your mucles ache, eventually it grabs your back leg, pulls you to the ground kicking and struggling, death is close, fear is paramount in your mind, tiger weighing you down, taking chunks out of your limbs, then that feeling of 2 large teeth going into your neck, pain, more crushing until you sence your own blood trickling down your neck, the fear and pain begin to disolve into light-headedness, a few minutes of confusion followed by black........ Makes us seem quite nice to our 'prey' really doesn't it. Did you use to be a tiger very detailed description of the kill! Very good lol I know, it gave me a bit of a lob-on if I'm brutally honest. Gerry
Makes me laugh when people who think "meat" comes in nice clean plastic bags from Tesco, are faced with the reality of nice cuddly creatures being killed and butchered. As a shooter / falconer (although no time to do either at the mo) I'm endlessly told how cruel I am when I quickly kill a healthy wild rabbit or phesant that has had a good natural life in the sun. I do this with careful concideration and thoughtfulness for the animals I hunt, love being in their environment and marvel at the beauty of a vivid cock phesant and the cuteness of baby rabbits as they play around their burrows in the spring. Don't think I'm a blood thirsty killer as some people tell me I am. If your'e a meat eater you ought to at least be aware that chickens don't lay McNuggets in a nice warm bed of straw Think this current trend to educate TV watchers is a good idea. tbourner
I want to know how a male tiger kills its prey now lol He just sits at home with a beer, the way it should be. I need to get into this hunting lark, so I can feed our dog on the cheap when we get him. Buying raw food is bleedin expensive!!! I wonder if the butcher will have any leftovers he could give us. RedM
Apart from the whole "isn't it icky" killing of animals there is the not very small matter of just how labour intensive and resource hungry the whole meat as food process is compared to a Vegan/vegetarian diet. Anyone care to look up the carbon footprint of typical 'fast food' burger?
stevie_b
Did anyone see Hugh Berney-Whittenstall (sp?) on his chicken project programme last night? He had to cull some chickens by hand that were not up to scratch. It made him break down, poor chap.

G This post leads me to another question...Most farmers, or people who "use" the land have a solid knowledge of the sustainibility of their produce, i.e. farmers don't slaughter and sell everything they have in one go, they maintain their stock and breed from them, the same with crops, they don't just rape the soil until it's utterly wasted. They understand the longevity of what they are doing. Why then, do fisherman trawl and trawl until all the fish, eg. cod, are nearly extinct? The same with whales in the 1900's, farmers from the 1700s knew about crop rotation and livestock has been maintained for millennia, yet with fishing we get these ridiculous situations where loads of dead fish are wasted because the Govt. has had to introduce complex quota systems, because fishermen can't seem to understand how to manage their "crop" properly. Are there any trawlermen on here who could explain it?

Rob
Easy... Greed But farmers are just as susceptable to greed, yet they don't stuff themselves over for a good years pay. I wonder if it's do with the concept of the sea being a bottomless well of resource, whereas the land is "two dimensional" IYSWIM.
ShamelessTT
Ive also been watching "The Lie Of The Land" the farmers thing. I was DISGUSTED with some of the common practices, for instance they hire a guy to shoot baby cows just cos they are cross breads and its costs less to kill them than to feed them (also not milk producing girls). I was shocked they just walked up to this baby cow and shot it in the head. There were 2 to be shot and the other one was watching and it was trying to run away and get out anyway it could. MADE ME SO ANGRY!! Si

Maybe a similar thing in numbers, you have 10 cows in your field so it's easy to see you need to breed 2 more (for example - I don't really know), then when 2 eldest die you've kept up your stock. But fishermen bring up literally tonnes of fish, it's harder to guage how many are left down there and how many are needed to keep up the numbers. Plus fishermen are fishing from the same pot, farmers keep stock of their own pots, so there's no reason to get what you can before the others take it all. MADE ME SO ANGRY!! Si That's hard economics, dictated by the supermarkets and therefore ultimately by us. I hate the way the major chains take all the profit and leave the farmers to struggle, chained into crippling contracts of supply, BUT...where I live I'm surrounded by farmland, I could buy all my veg from the local market on a Saturday morning, I could get milk, eggs and all meats direct from little farm shops if I wanted to and I could get all my household stuff from a few hardware/grocer type shops, but I still go to Tescos and Sainsburys once a week and get it all in one go, because it's cheaper and quicker and far less hassle, and therein lies the issue. Oh, and Si, sorry to appear heartless, but it was a baby cow, it would have been scared by the bang, but it could have no concept of it's own impending death having seen the other one killed. Charlotte
I think most people aren't naive enough to believe the meat just falls into packets like it does. It doesn't mean most will actually kill an animal and prepare it. Those slaughter house workers are something else aren't they?
Darren-K
Also,i would be quite happy to pay double what i pay now for bacon, chicken, milk and beef etc if the profit actualy went to the farmers, Farmers nowadays def get a bad deal,. For example - Farmers only get 3p a chicken when they sell them to tesco etc.
