Chris Wilson
Quote: from Ring Master on 7:39 am on Mar. 5, 2002[br] Motec's get a hell of a slating over on the evo list; even the rally boys seem to be using Gems now. Apparantly the processer speed is not in the same league as Gems/Autronic either. I know what you are saying about knock control, but what if you get a bad batch of fuel ? This is road use we are talking about, not race cars running non pump fuel. To be honest Chris, i'll happy to take whatever you recommend even if it is motec, but I cannee afford £7k for mapping !!! BTW, one of my customers said he gave you a run for your money in your RX7 in his evo6....you know Tony Rodriguez ? I still think Motec is the best reasonably priced ECU available. GEMS is good, and i have just bought a car on MBE, which is also fine. Never used Autronics, but a company that proclaims self mapping works is dodgy in my book :-) Yeah, I know Tony, his EVO cost what? Mega money, full cage, proper suspension and brakes, blah blah, full on engine on management, big turbo. ... I think he felt the pressure down the Craners, but I avoided him :-) Don't fiorget the RX cost me 3500 quid and was, at the time, as bought at auction with a sick, nay, dying, second turbo. Ask him how it fared against my Skyline the other day at Donington He's a nice guy, and his car is beautiful, a really proper bit of kit! Processor speed is not usually a big issue in embedded applications.
Ring Master
Im only mucking around Chris Tony almost certainly has the fastest track evo in the UK, he has spent well over £35k on mods so far and his car is stunning! I think a lot of evo owners would be deeply saddened to hear a £3.5k 1.4ltr Mazda gave him a run for his money...ROFL. As you say,Tony is a top bloke , complete petrol head (he just bought a set of AP 6 pots for his M5 from me !) and he speaks very highly of your too. Guest Martin F
Well allegedly the AEM Supra ECU was signed off for production on 22nd March, so should be hitting shelves (in the US) soon. Will be good to see how the first guinea pigs get on....
Chris Wilson
Well I hope it's better than this lump of *%'~# MBE box i have acquired on my Chevron. it has decided to lose the driver for half the coil pack, and go onto 2 cylinders. I was hoping to go to Oulton with it on Tuesday, but that now looks impossible. A pal popped in who is a Bosch repair guy, and really clued up on car electronics. He looked inside and laughed... I am thinking of rewiring the engine to run my motec from the mazda, and just flash a new programme when i want to swap over. The Motec is "aerospace standard" inside according to my pal, the MBE is "el cheapo"... Damned thing!!

How good is the GEMS, if that is what the board is based on then it should be as good as that (with the advantage of plugging straight into the loom)

Not that that is neccessarily a BAD thing, but nor is it a true stand alone ECU. Time will tell, I am very curious myself.
eyefi
is anyone here going for the aem ecu on release, or are we all waiting to see what happens first??
Alex
Don't think we'll get a look in for a while as I'm sure the US are going to grab the first load. Though JF I believe has ordered one....

That's how the zdyne is done for Hondas are done I think, The Hondata is very similar only needs an eprom blower and rom emulator to blow chip for it. Pretty sure from the posts on supraforum that the AEM was true standalone, but could be wrong.
