stevie_b Posted January 6, 2008 Share Posted January 6, 2008 Following on from garetheves' thread about getting an LCD monitor, it reminded me I was thinking of getting one too, probably a 19" as my budget is only around £150 give or take a bit. Several LCDs come in widescreen size, but is there any point to this assuming you don't watch DVDs on the computer? I think widescreen LCDs look too squat and long (I'm talking about computer use only). I'll post up my likely buys, to see if anyone's got an opinion on them.... I was thinking of these: 1) Iiyama ProLite E1902S, £165 dabs.com 2) LG L1960TR, £170 dabs.com 3) LG L194WT, £121 aria.co.uk. This one's widescreen 4) BenQ FP93E S. £149 Fully adjustable stand, has speakers and headphone socket, digital and analogue input. 5) Samsung SM940BW £137. Resolution 1440x900 (widescreen). Dsiplay area = 410mm H x 256mm V. Seems to have good adjustability. My only stipulation that is must have both analogue and DVI inputs. Digsy Posted January 6, 2008 Share Posted January 6, 2008 I've been using my 42" plasma as my PC monitor for a few years and personally I prefer it to a 4:3. The main reason is that most apps sit well in a 4:3 window but you get an extra bit dwn the side to make arranging ans selecting multiple windows easier. I don't like running bonkers resolutions but I do tend to have several apps running at once, so an extra bit of esktop space is valuable :-) Another reason is that desktop-hungry apps like pisture or video editing allow you to position the sub-windows around the side of what you are working on, rather than aying over the top. It's (fortunately or unfortunately) the monitor's industry trend at the moment and they're lobbying hard to get everyone on 8:5, 16:9 or 16:10 resolutions. Thorin Posted January 7, 2008 Share Posted January 7, 2008 I understand there's issues with older games running properly on widescreen monitors, that's the only thing that worries me as I play quite a few old games on emulators etc. I would like a new monitor though and I think I'll probably end up with a 22" widescreen.
