stevie_b
(Be warned, there will be plenty of opportunity for innuendo during this request. Feel free to insert your own jokes. ) I'm trying to fit a smaller gearknob in my NA 5 speed. Here's the knob that the car came with: http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f246/stevie-b/supra/gearstick_old_knob.jpg As you can see, it's non-standard. I'm trying to fit a standard one. I took the knob off the gearstick like so: http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f246/stevie-b/supra/gearstick_no_knob.jpg but the standard knob doesn't fit onto it. Here's a side view of the stick+knob: http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f246/stevie-b/supra/gearstick_new_knob.jpg The hole inside the knob is too small for the stick to fit in. Also, it looks like the stick is too long for the standard knob. I've tried pulling the stick, but it won't budge. Any thoughts on how I can get it to fit, preferably without bodging it (i.e. sawing bits off etc)?

JustGav
Don't like your old knob....the 2nd knob is a nice long one without that helmet thing on the top And remember if the hole is too small, break out the K&Y And this post has been completely useless to you
merckx
It looks like you have an additional sleeve fitted over the original threaded shaft. Is there a small allen key at the bottom holding it in place? Here's what it should look like: .....
ivan
It looks as if you might have left a sleeve in place when you removed the old knob. Edit: What Merckx said - and I can see an allen screw in the second pic...
CarlT67
Yea that black sleeve as mentioned above could be fitted by just the grub screws at the bottom, but it could also be threaded onto the metal shaft inside so once the grub screws are undone it may be a good idea to remove it in a anti clockwise fashion. Nic
Yes remove the black piece it's not standard.
stevie_b
Thank you very much (even you, Gav! ) ) I thought the black shaft might not be standard, that confirms it. The shaft does have some tiny holes at the bottom, so I'll try and insert an Allen key into them.
stevie_b
Ah that's better. New knob has been fitted. It feels like a new car again! Now that my shaft is shorter, the gear changes have a smaller throw on them. I think the standard knob looks really cute. Better than the big ugly thing with the bulbous curved end. merckx
If you don't mind me asking, how much did you pay for the new gear knob?
stevie_b
I picked it up from keron on here second hand for £5! I would guess Jezz might have some in his scrapyard if you're looking for one.
Nic
If you don't mind me asking, how much did you pay for the new gear knob? I can supply brand new OEM gear knobs if needed.
