I want to fit a standard gearknob

I'm trying to fit a smaller gearknob in my NA 5 speed. Here's the knob that the car came with:

As you can see, it's non-standard. I'm trying to fit a standard one. I took the knob off the gearstick like so:

but the standard knob doesn't fit onto it. Here's a side view of the stick+knob:

The hole inside the knob is too small for the stick to fit in. Also, it looks like the stick is too long for the standard knob. I've tried pulling the stick, but it won't budge.

Any thoughts on how I can get it to fit, preferably without bodging it (i.e. sawing bits off etc)?

Yea that black sleeve as mentioned above could be fitted by just the grub screws at the bottom, but it could also be threaded onto the metal shaft inside so once the grub screws are undone it may be a good idea to remove it in a anti clockwise fashion.

Ah that's better. New knob has been fitted. It feels like a new car again! Now that my shaft is shorter, the gear changes have a smaller throw on them.

I think the standard knob looks really cute. Better than the big ugly thing with the bulbous curved end.
