Angarak
I had a mate who took up boxing to lose weight, within 3 months he had lossed a load of weight and look a load better for it. I just hope the new boxing school near you is not the 'Frank Bruno Boxing Academy', they teach to you to tire your opponent out by punching their hands with your face. Lbm
im not sayin beat to pulp, but after a few sessions they take a good beating. It works alot, alot of thai boxers go through that regime and it does work, notice how much punishment kickboxers/thai boxers take from powerful kicks and punchs continuesly all over the body...the only way you can train for that is to actually take the punishment...obviously its controlled so no ones gonna get totally destroyed to a point where they walk away with broken ribs, but they do walk away in some pain..it sometimes gets you used to real life fightin situations such as defending yourself.. It depends on the person though...it really does, alot of people prefer to start off just from general cardio training n punchbag and work there way up....i personally prefered tougher sessions and it has greatly helped...but yea beginner classes are a good place to start if you have no experience.. I see what your saying...however, there's still a big difference between being able to take a pasting, or thinking you can take a pasting to actually having genuine fighting skills... Some people who start in martial arts and get treated badly tend to sod off and it can be a shame!
Lbm
PS...I've been teaching professionally for 20 years and I've seen dick-heads come in, try and puch or kick everyone- they're crap and frankly don't last very long. Also, I personally can't stand instructors that attempt to impress/intimidate students...you know they're not very good when this happens! Blackie...look at some clubs, make your mind up, but above all...enjoy your training, what ever style you find. Good luck Rob (A very tiny man )
Syed Shah
It is great and gets you in very good shape. I used to box in Milton Keynes, but work means it is a difficult option now. If you join a good club, it will transform your body faster than 99.9% of pursuits. Will probably encourage you to give up smoking too (not that it harms you that much if your active anyway). Daston
I used to go three times a week 1 hours each time. Mostly broke down to this 15 minute warm up (running star jumps sit ups ect) 30 minutes of pad work 15 of sparing. Just remember when u punch the power comes from your leg up to your hip and then swing. Give it a go im sure after a few weeks you will love it. only 15 min? When I did judo we had an hours warm up normaly by a marine!
Blackie
Also, I personally can't stand instructors that attempt to impress/intimidate students...you know they're not very good when this happens! i had this when i tryed to do kung fu about ten years ago, first day i went the instructor "demonstrated" a water punch on me, never went again
Lbm
i had this when i tryed to do kung fu about ten years ago, first day i went the instructor "demonstrated" a water punch on me, never went again I don't know why they do it... Actually I do- It's a bit like meeting a girl for the first time then slinging your piece out and saying "LOOK AT IT...YESSS!!!" Manners just won't do these days for some pepole Ps WTF is a "water punch"?
razza
only 15 min? When I did judo we had an hours warm up normaly by a marine! Would you prefer to learn to fight/survive for an hour or run around for an hour? I know my choice, we do 15-30mins warmup then train for the rest of the 2 hours. Fitness is very important but you gain that through the rest of the session and getting down the gym. Invest your time wisely:)

Pot
This is all you need : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qgDzdmdyvZE On another note, I've been having some sessions at the gym with a neighbour who's into Thai Boxing, we've just been doing some sparring so far before I think about getting into classes, but it is very enjoyable, and as someone said before, more about speed and technique than out and out power...
