Respect Blackie, I did some kickboxing type martial art. It was great, till you get hit. I dont take punches very well and got winded. It sucked. You get fit though. Trick is doing something you can sustain more or less over your life.

your quite sporty aint you carl? tennis and buying prezzies for birds at the gym. i really need to do something and as i said i find the gym boring. i should be a laugh sparing against my mates too

Damn, you must have good friends to do that. I'd be to competitive, or take a punch personally. But yeah, your 100% right, you have to enjoy it or find the idea exiciting. otherwise you stand no chance at keeping it up.

Yeah, played tennis and did my weights and stuff. It's a bit vain the gym stuff, but it beats looking like a sad old git in a few years time. :)

is it nearly all techneque? (sp) size dont really matter? and can you explain that a bit more?

Sure, Most of the movement comes from the hips you will learn how to punch correctly rather than widmill (pub punch) When they are teaching you watch the feet and hips more than the arms and fists. You should see the feet move and twist when the punch is thrown.

Any club worth a dam will make sure that you wont get hurt. The only time we used to set out to hurt someone was when they came in the club claiming to be then next Van Damme with 10 years of MMA, kickboxing, boxing experance. Everyone of them never came back after the first night.

As for your smoking give it up man its more expensive than fuel!

Oh man sorry i didnt see that part, theres loads of thai boxin n ju jitsu around london/surrey...

Boxing is the one for getting in shape, its good to help you control your arms and punchs in a fight aswell...

there must be a kickboxing or thaiboxing club around somewhere in your area..

Have to be picky as some will batter you for laughs, heard some real horror storys about clubs making people fight on thier 3rd lesson and stuff.

I personally think thats the best way....training to box and actually fighting are to totally different things, with me its better to get battered and fight my way out and build up respect..in thai boxing sometimes they will get people continuesly kicking you and punching as a workout!!, thats the whole point in a way as it gets your body used to taking the punishment..!!

it all depends on you though, you should go and try them all out see which club and style you prefer.

Thats totaly wrong, sorry i just dont see how beating someone to a pulp before they have any idea how to defend themselves can be teaching them anything other than not to go back to act as human kick shields.

im not sayin beat to pulp, but after a few sessions they take a good beating. It works alot, alot of thai boxers go through that regime and it does work, notice how much punishment kickboxers/thai boxers take from powerful kicks and punchs continuesly all over the body...the only way you can train for that is to actually take the punishment...obviously its controlled so no ones gonna get totally destroyed to a point where they walk away with broken ribs, but they do walk away in some pain..it sometimes gets you used to real life fightin situations such as defending yourself..

It depends on the person though...it really does, alot of people prefer to start off just from general cardio training n punchbag and work there way up....i personally prefered tougher sessions and it has greatly helped...but yea beginner classes are a good place to start if you have no experience..

Tougher sessions are great when you know what you are doing after all bags dont hit back. What im against is

1. Making 2 newcomers fight when they have little or no clue what they are doing.

2. Someone with experance taking a newb apart then claiming it will do him/her good.

Many people that go to these clubs will never fight in the ring, However if they want to spar and get beaten then fair play to them. I for one didnt have full contact sparing for 4months.

yea i see what your saying, i think martial arts are different for everyone in the way they see it...but i thniks its definatly a case of getting out there and trying different clubs and places until you find one where you are progressing and comftable in..

I boxed when I was in the army and also done a bit of pro kickboxing and boxing, boxing is great, make sure you find a good club, try and find out the credentials of the trainer, unfortunately there are always guys who know nothing about training, techique or fighting and they open a gym after attending a bucshee ABA course.

The only problem with boxing especially amateur is it focuses on scoring points (powder punches) and not really fighting (amateur rules I am afraid). Also if you plan to compete you will probably have to loose alot of weight as boxers mostly look drawn and underweight, they prefer you to be long a rangey rather that short and stocky.

I boxed at Welterweight (under 67kg and am 5 feet 6inches, this was considered way to short, my younger brother boxes at Welterweight also and is 5 feet 10 inches, great advantage for him when we spar.

In short find a good club, train hard and if you plan to compete, prepare to be hungry alot of the time.
