Aerotop design query - Element behind the rear seats (**UPDATED WITH PICS**)

Recommended Posts

The following pertains to an apparent difference in design from the normal “coupe” hardtop supra to the aerotop;

The interior bits are currently being swapped over from my coupe into the aerotop, however, the rear seats wont fit properly due to some additional catches or elements that Chris at hyper has said looks like there should be a form of strut bar (for example) running in between for strengthening (due to the aerotop?).

This "addition" is found behind the rear seats but before the stock subwoofer (which is found in GZ's)

I’ve asked Chris to take a picture to help explain things better, but in the meantime, does anyone know what I’m trying to describe here? What exactly are these two things, and should there be a bar running in-between them? Is it strengthening? And as such is it an essential part that needs replacing or are these two things just redundant?

Thanks on advance

Matt

Its probably one of these, like you can get from MVP:

http://www.mkiv.com/techarticles/doluck_floor_brace/index.html

and (14th item from top)

http://www.mvpmotorsports.com/Templates/frmTemplateM7.asp?SubFolderID=799&SearchYN=N

Its a floor brace that goes behind the front seats to strengthen, and control, the 'flex' you might experience with the roof off.

I want one of those :)

Sounds like a rear strut brace. The strengthening in the aerotop is mainly with extra plates spot welded on in the back seat area. Dude showed me once. You wouldn't notice them normally unless pointed out. I put a rear strut brace across the two rear suspension struts the same as the front ones. Stiffened my car up a treat with the roof out. It sits in pretty much the area you are talking about ie directly behind the rear seat over the top of where the stock sub is.

Hang on a mo you aren't talking about the two fwd mounts that the roof sits on in the boot are you?

Chris, did contact me asking if there was supposed to be a part in the rear seat area, but I couldn't picture what he meant, I could do with pictures if he gets stuck.

Your first 2 pics show the bit that holds the mounts for the aero roof when it is in the boot, there is nothing bolted inbetween them. The third pic is a bolt on strengthening piece at the bottom of the B-post and is hidden behind the rear trim panel. You will probably need some aero trim panels to fit where the roof mounting bits are. I'll try and get some pics later from mine.

Edit, here is a couple of shots with the seat in. The rear seat is the same in aero and hardtop, just the trim panels are different
