Chris and Alana
When my car is sat idling Im getting a noise from under the bonnet, it's a consistant type of shhhh . . . . . . shhhh . . . . . shhhh . . . . . .shhhh . . . . . . noise (if you get what I mean) when its idling but when you slightly blip the throttle it goes away. Iv had a look but cant pin point where it's coming from. Iv had a look at the belts and tension seems fine. Any idea's?
Sean1933
can you take a video as its almost impossible to determine where its coming from with that description
michael
Are you sure it's not an old lady telling you to be quiet? Sounds like a pulley / belt type thing if not.
Ryan.G
Is there a filter on the Idle control valve at the back of the intake manifold? if not sounds like there is a leak were it vents back into the intake system. When the car is idling the ICV opens to allow air into the intake manifold while the TB is closed to keep the engine alive but when you open the throttle more than 3% the ICV closes Ryan. Chris and Alana
Sounds like a pulley / belt type thing if not. I was thinking it may be something along those lines. It sounds like it's coming from around the front of the engine where the belts live but I cant quite put my finger on it. Iv never heard a failing or worn pully/bearing noise before so not sure what it could be. Do the pully's run on bearings? The other thing I thought it could be is a belt tensioner. It's hard to describe the noise so a vid may be best but it's not grinding and its not squeeking. It makes a slight chhh then a pause then a chh then a pause etc when idleing. Like I said earlier if you rev the engine it goes away while the revs are up but comes back when it goes back to idle. (the noise might not go away but things might be turning so quick that it's not noticable) Is there anything prone to wearing in that region? or could make that type of noise? My timimg belt is due in just under 10,000 miles so it might be worth just changing all the belts and tensioners. mmmmm, what about the water pump. . . could it make such a noise if it's worn? Thanks for the help so far anyway's guy's and sorry for the poor description.
robin
My power steering pump sometimes makes that sound. It sounds almost like somone has a small can of fine gravel and is turning it over and over. A couple of squirts of oil on the bearing and it goes away for a few days. I am planning to fit a new pump soon.
