The exhaust gasses will have cooled quite a bit by the time it hits the first cat. The aim of a EGT monitoring is to watch temperatures as close to leaving the head as possible. The MKIV hot spot is cylinder 3, I believe, so the ideal location is in the manifold just outside cylinder three IMO.

I think the hotspot is cylinder number six. Well at least on a UK spec because of the EGR.

Are you lot all a bunch of wusses on here or something ????

Ditch the CAT's all they do is purrrr a lot, you need to hear your inline six roar!!!!!

LMAO.....bring them out once a year just let them do their business.

yep they r both coming out, they could do with a rest. ive gone for the cw pipes so boost should be ok about @ 18psi. ive missed my opportunity to get my man to do the work soon, so im doing it myself cos i just can not wait any longer. im just in the process of doing a full fluid change (oil & filter, pas fluid, water) in readiness. its 12.30am and im just about to go and check the pas fluid has stopped draining. im not too sure about trying to fit the egt tho, so i think a visit to cw is in order. i see u soon when ive got it done.

Taking the first cat out (the one near the turbo) is the most difficult. But not a real problem if you have good tools. I used a long extension bar and a universal coupling to cope with the angle, as it is too awkward to get at with just a straight bar. A straight bar will only go on to the nuts part way so if they are rusted on you may damage the nut faces and make it very difficult to get off.
