Terminator
The exhaust gasses will have cooled quite a bit by the time it hits the first cat. The aim of a EGT monitoring is to watch temperatures as close to leaving the head as possible. The MKIV hot spot is cylinder 3, I believe, so the ideal location is in the manifold just outside cylinder three IMO.
Guest Martin F
I think the hotspot is cylinder number six. Well at least on a UK spec because of the EGR. Are you lot all a bunch of wusses on here or something ???? Ditch the CAT's all they do is purrrr a lot, you need to hear your inline six roar!!!!! Terminator
Now Martin those are harsh words. Have a heart, ditching cats, sound a trifle barbaric. I just keep mine in a box in the garage loft.

Terminator
Taking the first cat out (the one near the turbo) is the most difficult. But not a real problem if you have good tools. I used a long extension bar and a universal coupling to cope with the angle, as it is too awkward to get at with just a straight bar. A straight bar will only go on to the nuts part way so if they are rusted on you may damage the nut faces and make it very difficult to get off. eyefi
yep, ive been looking at that bugger today, ive been soaking the nuts in wd40, they dont look like theyll come off in a hurry. ill find out tomorrow.
Terminator
I soaked mine, put the socket firmly on each nut, pushed in the universal coupling on the end of a 10-inch extension, and cracked them with a 3-foot bar. No problem.
