I had an old room mate who was cajun and one hell of a boozer. He swore by a pint of room temperature water and two tablets 45 mins pre drinking: Dandilion and Milk Thistle. Then another glass before bed if he remembered. Another solution is to drink Miso-awamori = no hangover. My fave.... Water then a Bloody Mary, followed by something greasy and an Ice Cold Coca-Cola with two antacids. Followed by more water.

Edit - and some sex.

never understood why people need to drink until they drop......seems like quite an irresponsible thing to do and completely unaccepted in other European countries.

Leave your accusations at home, fella. To be completely honest, I met one of my best mates, who I'm best man for at his upcoming wedding, and we hadn't seen each other for 3 weeks through work, so we obviously had a good long chat, over a couple... it certainly wasn't a question of 'drinking to drop'.

I remember feeling practically sober walking back, just waking up this morning I thought 'ow!'

Guaranteed to work:

To Be Taken pre-bed:

2 Boxes of straight cut microchips absolutely covered in salt

1 pint of irn bru

2 paracetamol

To be taken when you get up:

2 pints of Irn Bru, not too quickly or you will be sick. Over the course of a half hour.

A good salty and fatty fryup. Lots of salt, lots of fat. Ideal one of that up here is the scotch pie, not readily available in England though.

The above has worked every single time for me. The trouble is that I am often too pissed to carry out the night before ritual. The morning after part will still work but it will be a lot harder to get down.

The secret with the irn bru is the caffeine content. I guess you could substitute the same with coca cola but I'd always rather have Irn Bru.

What European countries? I've been to France, Germany, Belgium, Holland, Austria, Spain and Greece and t's quite normal in those places. I know for a fact that the Swedes are completely nuts when it comes to drinking, and the Americans, Aussies and the parts of Mexico and the Carribean i've been to are quite partial to it too if you want to look outside of Europe.

Binge drinking is commonplace in most areas of the world from my experiences. You may not understand it but that really just means you are not in a position to judge.

No offence intended :)

As for a hangover cure, i'd recommend at least a pint of water if you're stomach/bladder can hack it, followed by plenty of fruit juice the next day. Not best for the guts but definately best for the head :)

There is no cure for a hangover. Talk to any doctor, a hangover is caused by dehydration (alcohol absorbs water in the body) and your body trying to get rid of all the toxins in the alcohol. The best way to cure it is to prevent it. Drink water, non fizzy, before, during and after drinking will help to minimise the effect of too much alcohol and the likely hood of a hangover. Taking pain killers actually gives your liver another clobbering while is is trying to get rid of the alcohol so best avoided. If you can try to walk off the effects of alcohol, and drink water before going to sleep. If you have been drinking heavily the chances are, you will not have eaten much, so some carbohydrates will help replace some of the blood sugar, and reduce the feelings of weakness.

Dehydration and lack of salt due to sweating. The lack of salt is what makes you feel sick, the lack of fluids is what gives you the sore head.

Thats the reason my suggestion works. Lots of salt and fluids before going to bed, lots of salt and fluids after waking up ;)

And you are referring to the locals in those countries in PUBLIC places and not the brit tourists?

In my experience it is not common practise is france, italy, germany to name a few (locals that is, not brits on holiday there); definitely frowned upon in public and in italy for example, not even tolerated by the police - they go very heavy handed on drunks.

Buttermilk will line the stomach and a pint and half or so is known to allow the most stupid short term drinking binges. When I was young and daft I bet some fellow idiot that I could drink him under the table, his choice of booze. I think it was whiskey, and I HATE the stuff with a passion. 2 pints of buttermilk a half hour before the session, and I recall about a bottle and half of whiskey was consumed by each of us, at a ridiculous rate. Off to a quiet corner to make myself sick and I was pretty much OK, he was off to casualty later that evening, for a pumping out. I think even buttermilk will only slow the absorption of alcohol, if you don't bring it up it'll get you in the end. Not recommended, just something from the wilder side of my youth.... :)
