Ethernet cable to computer phone line socket

Recommended Posts

Saga of in-laws computer / internet drags on....

Windows 98, previously dial-up, has a small phone line socket in the back. Sky broadband kit purchased, router has ethernet cable...is there an adaptor available to connect ethernet cable to computer phone line socket ? Is it even possible ?

The Sky router can do wireless...is there a wireless add-on for Win 98 that will fit a phone line socket ?

Sigh.

What is with the phone line? If the phone line is connected to the router, job done... no need to touch it again. What you are after is a way to connect the router to the PC either via an ethernet lead or wireless. Assumption here is that the PC and router are in different rooms.

Wireless solution is probably the easiest, however if the win98 makes has a network card already, then perhaps get a homeplug solution which uses your 240v wiring as the network backbone.

That's like trying to connect a drinking straw to a gas outlet and expecting haddock to come out Ewen :)

As Jake says you need a network card, a wireless or wired one but for ease and remove the need for constant support once installed I'd go with the wire.

Yup, after a think, the computer socket is for a modem, not a phone socket. The is no wireless connectivety in the computer, so as Jake says, probably have to buy a card.

Just realized, I've got an old dlink 802.11b card which is pci based. Assuming it is on win98 usb will be ropey. You are welcome to the card.

I reckon I'd have more luck with a Haddock

Here is an option, since I will be popping down at some stage to see you, want me to have a look at this for you.. I'll bring some spare cables.......Just realized, I've got an old dlink 802.11b card which is pci based. Assuming it is on win98 usb will be ropey. You are welcome to the card.

Thanks very much re the cables Gav but the computer in question is 30 miles from me at the in-laws. I've talked to Maplins just now, they have a card that will do it as long as in-laws have a spare pci slot. I'll happily take your card though if you are ok with that. I'm not sure if the computers Win 98 or Win 98 SE if that makes a difference (Maplins thinks it might)

Thanks guys.

My advice is "run away screaming"...

Or make sure that whatever you do ends with a satisfying "KZZZRRRT!" noise, allowing you to claim total hardware failure, so they might as well get an up to date system.

:)Already tried running Chris, but the wifes nagged me so much I caved in. They have been given a free computer by a friend...it works ok, just a little old. Besides, I get a feeling of omnipotence dealing with folk that know even less about computers than I do.

Can be combated with the time honoured method of chanting "La la la, I can't hear you", followed by sticking your fingers in your ears and running away giggling. :)
