Gearbox question

Hi- I've read the FAQ's, and done a search, but couldn't find an answer to this:

I do airfield trackdays (no hard stuff to hit), the runway we use is 1.7 miles long, how much difference would there be between two bone stock J-specs, one being auto, the other manual (I can hear you groaning from here- but most posts are about 1/4 miles, of which the general opinion nods the auto's), from 100-Vmax.

Sorry for asking a faq (but I couldn't find it).

ps, how much is it to get the front seats retrimmed in leather?

Cheers

I would expect the auto to be slighly down on power (to the wheels), so also have a lower Vmax. So if you're just interested in acceleration, then you'd want to know the time between two fixed speeds in order to compare the cars.

The manual takes longer to change gear (and there's more gear changes), but this would be insignifant if you're comparing times of more than a few seconds.

As the gears in the manual are closer, it will more often be at the right spot in the rev range too.

Therefore, I would expect the manual to accelerate a bit faster over the long run you're describing.

Welcome from Pistonheads by the way :) Are you going to buy a Supra?

James.

That's not a faq, don't think anyone has asked that before, or knows the answer probably! On the way to/from the 'ring last year my manual was a bit faster from 100+ up to 180 odd than CJs pretty similar auto I would say definitely, but difficult to be objective about it on the autobahn!

For seat retrims you want to talk to Gibson&Boyne (millhouse on here is their representitive). They've done a couple of group buys on retrims - the last one was £500 for fronts in just leather IIRC. There's a thread for the last group buy here.

I have an Auto J-spec and its limited to 187 mph , it can get there in about a mile though !!!

Hey, that's cheating! I don't think you've got the standard auto gearbox (or standard anything :) )

I wonder what determines how quickly a car reaches its Vmax, given that a more powerful car has a higher Vmax?

For example, would your supercar (if de-limited) reach its Vmax any faster than a stock supra reaches its Vmax? I'm assuming here you don't hit the limiter in top gear before you run out of power.

Yep, just trying to find one, and get the MR2 px'd.

Found a gorgeous Aerotop in Southampton, and for some reason i just assumed it was a turbo- it isn't though.

Have found a rather nice TT up in Leicester, it's an Auto, leather, all the toys and then some, so going to look at that on Sunday- hopefully will have it all ready for the Pistonheads Vmax in March, as I don't want to run the MR2 again.
