We're using Qtek 2020's (same device) for Windows Mobile development work at the moment. They seem OK as far as Pocket PC's go. No onboard WiFi though which may or may not bother people. Also got an iPAQ 6365 here, but I've swithced back to a normal phone now for making calls as I felt a bit daft with a PDA sycuk to my ear, and I kept knocking the volume up and down with my ear.

There's a forum on http://www.xda-developers.com if you're interested.

Thanks, Chase.

Basically, I want...

1) It to be able to talk directly to my PC - no thrid party software fannying, so I reckon that means Windows Mobile OS.

2) 2003 version (2002 was supposedly unstable).

3) Uses Outlook to manage contacts an appointments, to include

Names

Telephone numbers (duh!)

Postal addresses

e-mail addresses

Event reminders

Repeating events (yearly, monthly, etc)

4) Sync via bluetooth if possible, or via cable / charging cradle (minimum fannying).

5) Stable and reliable.

Not fussed about ringtones, WiFi or video messaging. I want it mainly for calling, texting, occaisional MMS but primarily as a central point for managing my busy, executive lifestyle on the move :D

The XDAII is great , buy one.

They are cheap now too. I've had mine for a year now and its been very reliable.

One hard reset only .... very few soft resets

Doesn't have full BT support for handsfree use, but is fine for answering calls.

Check it has the latest ROM version. Updates are downloadable and done via active sync

I wouldn't be without one, and will be tempted with the new version with built in WIFI.

Use it for TomTom (ta Jake!), MP3's and phone calls on the bike.

Then use the pocket office suite for work stuff. I also bought an expansion jacket with built in extra battery, CF slot and VGA out for Powerpoint presentations.

It can be set up to grab your emails automatically if you so desire and can handle multiple accounts. Web stuff is ok , but obviously the screens a little small.

Brodit do a great car kit and TomTom runs great and is a must have IMO

You must be Matt from Oxford ;)

Cheers for that. Can I take it that you use Pocket Outlook to sync with full-fat Outlook to do all the stuff that I listed?

What are the implications of a hard or soft reset? Last year I nearly bought a Motorola MPX200 but was put off by a host of bad reviews, many of which said that the frequently required hard resets meant you had to re-load all your data into the phone from scratch. Seemed a bit odd..

Can you use the BT functionality to sync or do you have to use the USB cradle?

My only real concern is its size when used as a phone, and the lack of a hard keyboard meaning I have to look a bit uncool and use the stylus if I want to text someone in a nightclub. WOuld love the XDA IIs with te slide out keyboard but y'know.. £78 versus £300!!!

What? Where can I get an XDA2 for £78?

That's a bargain! Dish it Digsby

From the O2 online shop! It's actually £79.99 Make sure you pick the II and not the IIs.

Maybe they are out of stock when push comes to shove, but that's the price anyways....

Check it out. Please don't buy the last one!

PS. The online shop actually seems to be down at the moment but it was working earlier.

Went and got touchy-feely with one at my O2 shop today. Nice! It actually feels smaller in the hand (no sniggering at the back) than the measurements suggest (130x70x19). It's actually £79.99 over the counter as well, but the highstreet tariffs aren't quite as good as you can get online.

Shame on The Link (with whom I could get free insurance for two years) for wanting £300 pounds for this phone - the same price as the updated one!

..and also to the girl in Phones4U who plainly had no idea what she was talking about, but was happy to blather on about nothing and then stare at me blankly rather than using her initiative and getting someone who might actually be able to help.

Hard reset , and you have to reinstall everything. Good backups are essential, but easy enough to do. Soft reset is just a reboot.

Yep, Pocket to full fat outlook

Syncs over BT or cradle or IR

Get another phone for clubbing!

I just got an i-mate JAM. It's the little-known, little brother of the XDAII and doesn't have the keyboard or WiFi but it's a good compromise between a brick and a phone. This phone will soon be known as the XDAII mini, IIRC it's 108x58x18 and it has bluetooth.

So, I just need to get an SDIO WiFi card then Bob's my uncle.

Hmm that's intesresting. Actuallt the XDA IIs is the one with the keyboard, the plain ol` II has teh on screen keyboard like the JAM.

They are on www.phones2udirect.co.uk for £108.99 (+VAT I guess) AND you can get it on Vodafone! Shame I don't know anywhere that I can actually have a demo on one. Where did you get yours from?

What software did yours come with? I want at least Pocket Word, Poclet Excel, Media Player, Internet Explorer and most importantly Pocket Outlook.

Yeah that's where I got mine from, but for £87.99 with the £35/month tariff on O2. It worked out £19 more over the year (rental plus the phone) to have an extra 50 minutes per month. The price is inc. vat and they are in Sevenoaks, Kent if you're anywhere near there for a demo. The other place you can get them is expansys.com who are in Manchester.

It comes with the proper windows for pocket PC software which includes everything you asked for. I'm really enjoying getting to know mine, just rationalising my phone nos and outlook contacts has proved a worthwhile exercise.

Balls, balls, balls!

Love that i-Mate JAM, but the tariffs on Phones2Udirect.co.uk are terribble!! 100 minutes and 100 texts for £25 per month. Most of their better deals revert back to standard tariffs after 3 months. :(

I can get 100 anytime or 300 off peak minutes plus 500 texts for the same amount or even cheaper from O2 on the XDAII.

Trouble is, I've just learned that I'm probably going away on business for the next two weeks so I won't have the statutory 14 days cooling off period to try it out after its delivered. I bet the offer on the XDA will have expired by the time I get back :( Arse!

The £30/month tariff isn't too bad IMO but then I need 200 minutes or more (so have gone for the £35/month one).

If you get a JAM I don't think you'll want to send it back, but I wouldn't think the 'offer' will expire - I didn't think there was anything particularly special about it (except for the fact that there's only a few places in the UK with them at the moment).

OK, OK, public apology to Phone2Udirect.co.uk - They have a Voda tariff for just £15.99 per month which gives 600 off-peak minutes and 250 SMS. I missed it because it's an 18 month contract. The phone is a bit pricey at £175 but I can get a refund 2 unused years out of 4 on my current phone insurence policy which will cover £81 of that. Coo-oool!

I think I'm gonna buy one :D
