If you go for the disco, make sure its a facelift 2002/3 onwards, most of the car was changed and its a much better ride. Mine cost £5150 for a 52 plate last month, Td5 with the 3.5t limit. Massive improvement on the older models, the air suspension is cool but expensive if it goes wrong.

I have been using the parkers online guide to see what the towing weights are, the 530d comes in at 2000kg which should cover a stripped out MKIV on a trailer.

That's a very high towing weight for a 530.

Manufacturers towing limits are not set by issues of stability, simply by the car’s physical capability. In an ideal world, with perfectly surfaced roads, no crosswinds, air turbulence from speeding HGVs etc, then this limit could be used for matching purposes.

It's widely recommended that you shouldn't tow anything heavier than 85% of the kerb weight of the towing vehicle. :)

Ah you can pull that air suspension straight out for not a lot of money. AFAIK its only the rear of that model is on air right?? Its only a case of swapping out the airspirings for coil springs. Did it on my rangey all round for £450.

Wont the 2002 onwards have higher road tax?

IME towing 2000kg+ in a car is really not a nice experience, a big and heavy 4x4 is a far easier and safer way to pull something of that weight. Range rovers are superb for it, but obviously expensive to run. I had a landcruiser diesel for one jouney and that felt the safest other than the range rover.

You could pick up an older diesel range rover for not too much these days, they are VERY comfy, have lots of toys but fuel economy is bad.
