Wez
A Land Rover Disco TD5 is another option, it will also need to be my daily driver.
dangerous brain
Go for as new a disco as you can get. My rec would be an LPG V8 if you can find one.
JamieP
Mitsubishi L200 pickups can be had for that money, will tow with ease and plenty of room in the back for spare wheel/parts etc, avoid the early D22 navara, they have big engine problems. ozz
If you go for the disco, make sure its a facelift 2002/3 onwards, most of the car was changed and its a much better ride. Mine cost £5150 for a 52 plate last month, Td5 with the 3.5t limit. Massive improvement on the older models, the air suspension is cool but expensive if it goes wrong. Vicky
The mitsubishi shogun warriors are also very good at towing and are a comfortable every day car too.
colsoop
I would go with a landcruiser, solid bit of kit.
merckx
I have been using the parkers online guide to see what the towing weights are, the 530d comes in at 2000kg which should cover a stripped out MKIV on a trailer. That's a very high towing weight for a 530. Manufacturers towing limits are not set by issues of stability, simply by the car’s physical capability. In an ideal world, with perfectly surfaced roads, no crosswinds, air turbulence from speeding HGVs etc, then this limit could be used for matching purposes. It's widely recommended that you shouldn't tow anything heavier than 85% of the kerb weight of the towing vehicle.
Wez
What do people think a twin axle trailer and a MKIV weighs in at? Is 2000kg a fair guess?

TLicense
What do people think a twin axle trailer and a MKIV weighs in at? Is 2000kg a fair guess? It's going to be around that. Factor in a bit of additional weight for bits and bobs and a bit of a safety factor and you could be looking at as much as 2200Kg maybe.
JamieP
The 200's are pretty thirsty though even when not towing anything. For a diesel they are not great, my last L200 averaged 25mpg and my new Navara is only a little better.
garethr
I don't think I'd want to tow a car, even a stripped one, with a car... This was a Stagea towing a GTR. http://www.gtr.co.uk/forum/102648-r-i-p-s-drag-r-accident.html

Ah you can pull that air suspension straight out for not a lot of money. AFAIK its only the rear of that model is on air right?? Its only a case of swapping out the airspirings for coil springs. Did it on my rangey all round for £450.

Homer
IME towing 2000kg+ in a car is really not a nice experience, a big and heavy 4x4 is a far easier and safer way to pull something of that weight. Range rovers are superb for it, but obviously expensive to run. I had a landcruiser diesel for one jouney and that felt the safest other than the range rover. You could pick up an older diesel range rover for not too much these days, they are VERY comfy, have lots of toys but fuel economy is bad.
dangerous brain
I'd soooo stay away from a p38 range rover deisel. Not only does it have the unreliability issues that are inherent in p38's its also not got the oomphy feeling from the V8 and is in fact slower than a snail. DNK's landcruiser is what I'd look at.
