Good towing motor for £5k

Mine is a 51 plate manual with 130'000 on the clock. 2.5 turbo D (LTD CRD)

 

We have had it since new but you can pick them up for 5k - i would suggest not getting the older shape though. Ours has been reliable. In the last 30'000 i did bushes, anti roll bars and tailgate lock as auto lifting wasnt working.

 

Its the biggest car as people carriers go. its like having a cumphy van. 7 seat, 5 of which come out.

Fronties are good motors and you won't find a newer 4x4 for the money. I've had a few, currently the 3.2v6 and it gets used off road (utility, not sports) and for towing horse trailers with horses in. You'll probably get a 2000 model plus for well under 3k.

 

I personally don't like the discos, my dad has had several - he loves them. Far too wallowy for my liking and not good on petrol/diesel.

 

Non 4x4, the Omege Elite MV6 estate is a stunning bit of kit. I had an ex police car estate, performed really well and for the money (£300!) was the most comfortable drive I have ever had (up until the supra). Was LPG too. Don't know what the towing limit was but it was a heavy car.

 

Surfs are great, been tempted a few times but they can be really unreliable - my dad had one that something failed on it (head gasket I think is the common problem) and it cost nearly 2k to fix. My neighbour has one and it spends more time in the garage than on the road - I think he's given up on it now which is a shame, it has the lifted suspension.

The older 2.4s are prone to headgasket probs, the newer 3.0 turbos are bulletproof :)

We used to run a 2.8TD Shogun/ Pajero LWB , pulled superbly had all sorts on the back of it. Mega reliable and cheap to buy these days. Although i admit rather dated.

 

Current tow car is an A6 TDI Avant (98 on model) Superb quality , tis a nice thing , tows well although might struggle with a heavy supra.

Vauxhall = CRAP! Get A Volvo 850 for towing, or a decent 3.0V6 Camry. Audi estates are cool but expensive when they go wrong.

Bringing this back to life, still looking around, looks like a BMW 530d touring could do the trick.

 

I have been using the parkers online guide to see what the towing weights are, the 530d comes in at 2000kg which should cover a stripped out MKIV on a trailer.

 

Thoughts?

Head cracking problem, not headgasket ;) It is easy swap with uprated head and those are going sweet and gives back good economy. I used mine few times to tow and Hilux did not even sweat, I was remainded I'm towing something only on roundabouts when I seen trailer in my mirrors :D

 

Go for Hilux, you can get good example for between 2000-3000 pounds, you will never regret it. Also worth mentioning - parts for those cars costs peanuts.

I had to recover a mates mkiv but not stripped out, i used an 850 Volvo estate with a twin axle Brian James trailer and to say i wouldnt want to do that again is an understatement.

I dragged my aristo back from Holland with my 4.6 range rover on gas and it didn't even notice it was there most of the way. My disco would pull a house down and its only a 200 TDI. I'd recommend a land/range rover any day of the week. If you go volvo you'll get more for your money in the 940 market and its RWD. Money you are talking would put a V90 on the drive though. Nissan patrol is meant to be a decent tower as well. If you want to tow another vehicle regularly look at a heavy wagon like a 4x4 because its not its pulling power you need to worry about its the vehicles being pushed by its loads ability that counts. I would also have a look around at transit based recovery wagons with a tilt flat bed.
