Jake
Does this sound like the heater matrix has gone? . . . The windows steamed up really badly as soon as I set off from home for work this evening and there's a horrible smell inside the car. Not sure how to describe the smell - maybe like burnt antifreeze. 45mins drive to work with the AC on full but the misted windows never cleared. No sign of wetness on the carpet, not yet anyway. Engine didn't overheat. Heater matrix?
JustGav
Yup, same thing happened here on the NA..just before the core fully split.. Still not sorted it yet...
Jake
Oh joy. Surprised it's happened on a y2k Supra though. My 93's one is still going strong. Luck of the draw I suppose.
Havard
Why is the carpet not wet then?? H.
JustGav
Why is the carpet not wet then?? H. If it is a small fracture the steam will evoparated and the split will get bigger THEN the carpet gets wet.

JamieP
yea is a surprise on such a new car, i think it was on toquicktostop's car that he thought the matrix had gone but turned out to be just a split pipe on the matrix that was leaking down into the car, worth a look before you rip the dash out mate:)
Jake
Good idea. I'll check that. Cheers J
Chiefgroover
Jake you and luck arnt really holding hands with that motor, that matrix is one of if not the worst job to do on a Supra. Hope its just a leaking rubber pipe.
Jake
Hi Ernie, I don't think this car has been unlucky for me. The only problem I've really had with it was when the turbo bearings went. In 12000 miles on a highly modded car I think that's pretty good reliability. Anyway, I've just been out and checked the coolant level in the rad and it's full. So if it is leaking it's only very slightly at the moment. Havard
Are the heaters inside the car blowing warm Jake! I have recently had a leak under the bonnet from the cooling system and the header/expansion tank level didn't change. The heater pipes at the top near the bulkhead just became air locked! Hope it's not the dreaded mate! H.
Jake
The heater is working but now that you mention it I have noticed over the last few weeks that it takes forever to get them up to full temp. It's never fully hot until the car has done like 10miles or more!
Whitesupraboy2
sounds just like mine and I had no water in the footwell either. Yes mine was the heater matrix if you want help with the job mate just let me know

It's never fully hot until the car has done like 10miles or more! Sounds like a classic airlock taking place. It's a matter of where the coolant is leaking out. Hope it's the pipe and not the matrix. I was lucky that it was a feeder pipe to the LPG vapouriser but the heaters became slowly worse over a week or two!! H.
tooquicktostop
Yep mine was a split pipe as JamieP mentioned, my new TT6 has a matrix problem to, it seems to be a very weak point in the Supra
megawatts
Yeap done a Mk 3 and a MkIV. The MK3 Matrix I had, was actually repaired in the factory, and the repair failed, under pressure, thus steam, and nasty smell. The Matrix feeder tubes can get bent in manufacture, so they just bend them back.. leaving a stressed section, that can blow after some time, under pressure. The MkIV is a notroius one for airlocks and no heat.
TLicense
It really is a PITA job to do. I replaced the matrix on my GT-Four and it was a nightmare. I then found out that Toyota would do the job for £700. It would have been worth every penny!
