Heater matrix ?

Does this sound like the heater matrix has gone? . . .

The windows steamed up really badly as soon as I set off from home for work this evening and there's a horrible smell inside the car. Not sure how to describe the smell - maybe like burnt antifreeze.

45mins drive to work with the AC on full but the misted windows never cleared.

No sign of wetness on the carpet, not yet anyway.

Engine didn't overheat.

Heater matrix?

Hi Ernie,

I don't think this car has been unlucky for me. The only problem I've really had with it was when the turbo bearings went. In 12000 miles on a highly modded car I think that's pretty good reliability.

Anyway, I've just been out and checked the coolant level in the rad and it's full. So if it is leaking it's only very slightly at the moment.

Are the heaters inside the car blowing warm Jake!

I have recently had a leak under the bonnet from the cooling system and the header/expansion tank level didn't change. The heater pipes at the top near the bulkhead just became air locked!

Hope it's not the dreaded mate!;)

The heater is working but now that you mention it I have noticed over the last few weeks that it takes forever to get them up to full temp. It's never fully hot until the car has done like 10miles or more!

Sounds like a classic airlock taking place. It's a matter of where the coolant is leaking out. Hope it's the pipe and not the matrix. I was lucky that it was a feeder pipe to the LPG vapouriser but the heaters became slowly worse over a week or two!!

Yeap done a Mk 3 and a MkIV. The MK3 Matrix I had, was actually repaired in the factory, and the repair failed, under pressure, thus steam, and nasty smell. The Matrix feeder tubes can get bent in manufacture, so they just bend them back.. leaving a stressed section, that can blow after some time, under pressure.

The MkIV is a notroius one for airlocks and no heat.
