Hi all, i have purchased a web domain for my dads new paint and decorating business though fast hosts and would love to get it up and running with a portfolia, prices etc etc.

The only problem with this is that i have not got a bloody clue how to??

So are there any web designers here that could help me out and show me the ropes??

Thanks in advance for any advice. I keep downloading dreamweaver (correct??) but it never seems to work..............

right then, first of all, i dont use dreamweaver, even though everyone rates it....i use microsoft front page 2003, its the equvialent of word for making a webpage ;) so very simple to use....

the easiest way to start is get on google, and have a search around for some free web templates, dont waste your time trying to make one.....so find a template you like, and download it using the options on the site etc.

open the template in a web editor, and then change all the info. in it to turn it into your homepage....once you have done that save your homepage in a brand new folder on your pc....call the folder 'website' or something, and then save the hompage as 'index.html' inside it.....(dont save the original template in the same folder, as that will be called 'index' as well, and then it will get confusing)

That should get you started, once you have done that, ill tell you where to go from there lol...

hope this helps :)

You dont actually need any software to make web site these days. With the new web 2.0 kicking around there are some online sites that give you all the tools to do the job online with no downloading.

One of the best ones is this:

http://www.moonfruit.com

Theres LOADS of templates to choose from also its a very simple point and click interface, easy for first time users and looks very good (most things are done in Flash which give a very polished look)

Last time i think they charged something like £20 a year or so, and you can use your own domain name to point to the website you build with their online software (very easy steps on the site, a simple one field change)

They also have a very good support service so you can ask them if you have any problems.

Give it a go and im sure you'll like it.

Hope it helps!

Foz.

First thing is make sure you have a decent hosting package. Presume that is all sorted when the domain was bought.

For the main design i use dreamweaver to create html pages. I personally find dreamweaver over frontpage but it is personal preference.

As mentioned your best bet if your a novice and on a budget is to download a free template , be it a PSD based one or a HTML based one. If your going PSD based you need to have some photoshop skills really.

Another cheap solution for a lot of templates is buy a cheap disc off ebay.

You need to have a good idea of the sort of information you want include and the type of colour scheme you want to go with before you select your template. Although most can be easily adapted you made find it easier to select one that pretty much meets your needs.

Once you have downloaded the template it will be more than likely in HTML format which will open up in frontpage/dreamweaver. This will allow you to edit the template and add content. Once you have filled all the relavent pages in , its then time to upload all pages / images used to your webspace , for this i use an FTP Manager.

Its hard to give you a full detailed guide through a forum, but your more than welcome to catch me on msn or email me gordr555(at)hotmail.com

Depending on how much of a rush your in , i can help put you a site together as i do bits from time to time. Although i am tied up with A Level module exams in Jan.

Again catch me on msn / mail to talk further about that.

Don't take this the wrong way Mr Fish, but Im assuiming you've only looked at your website in Internet Explorer - in Firefox it does not look good at all....to the point where there is no content rendered.

Something you may want to look into during the festive break as your losing out on potential customers by resricting your visitors to IE. :)
