jevansio
Bought something which should help for the winter months, it's a 4.6 Vogue, already been LPG converted so shouldn't be too harsh on running costs. Bit late to be asking for buying advice , but has anyone on here got any knowledge on these & thing to look out for (I can still back out), know about the rusty tailgate & air suspension. edge
LPG landys will eat O2 sensors on a regular basis. On my 4.0 V8 non lpg it used to get through them (same engine apart from bore size) Also maf sensors faults common. You want it running a smooth as the V8 should. Electrics are far from great and it may leak alot after heavy rain but for the prices of these things it shouldnt be too bad as there are tons of specialists and parts are quite cheap unless you goto a main dealer. Alot of people say they eat tyres but that is not true if geo is setup right. If you need any main dealer parts i can get you discount. The V8 landy block is renowned for being porous and you may see some oil loss, a small amount is ok but there is a very good treatment which i have seen used with brilliant results. Looks nice

dangerous brain
Rangey p38. You could just have bought yourself an utter money pit mate. Mine has cost me thousands since I've had it. The BECM if it goes wrong is 2 grand straight away and the car won't operate if that goes tits its the bodies complete internal ecu if you like and its full of micro relays that burn out (first signs are the heated seats won't work, remote locking isn't reliable and windows don't operate properly). The air suspension can be a complete mare which is why i ripped mine out. Just so you know the compressor is over 250 the bags a ton each the manifold is known to go wrong as well and are over a ton second hand. The sensor for the remote locking can keep your BECM awake whilst the car is locked any time its parked near any wireless network or strong radio signal, this flattens your battery and leaves you locked out of the car with a flat battery. Also the air suspension if its suffering a leak anywhere will keep operating the air compressor with the car locked and that will flatten your battery. Now for the niff naff. The blender motors that control where your heating and aircon air gets directed to break regularly (I have receipts for them being done twice and they are gone again on mine now) To fix them picture supra heater matrix and you are in the right area here. The HEVAC that controls the climate control also breaks regularly (thats another 250). The main fuse box is a service item and won't last beyond 5 years. If you are lucky you smell it burning a bit before the whole thing welds itself together. Theres the head gasket issue at around 100k miles where the piston liners get loose and smash the head gasket up that you said you know about. All in all it really is not a cheap car to own and run. In the words of the land rover salesman I know "the p38 was an experiment by land rover with electronics, they used the model to perfect the electronics for the new model now" He personally thinks the car when its out of warranty is a bag of cr*p Hope that enlightens you a little chap PS the LPG isn't going to make it an uber cheap car to run either lol. Around town mine is doing 12 mpg and the best I have ever seen out of it is 21mpg briefly whilst driving behind a truck for over 50 miles on the motorway at 56 mph. So even with LPG its still going to be expensive to feed.
jevansio
So I guess check all electrics & remote locking work well then ;D, cheers for the heads up on the problems though DB
dangerous brain
No worries. That ones a bit newer and they did try and iron out some of the problems towards the end of the line. You may or may not have the upgrade central locking reciever (park it near an airport if the battery is flat when you get back then its not got the upgrade). The kit to change from air to normal springs is only £400 and isn't that hard a job. If its not been done already get a fuse box and change it (they aren't expensive to buy and aren't that complicated to change yourself). The piston liners I'm afraid you buy your raffle ticket and see what happens with that. Look on the climate control readout. If there is a little book with exclamation mark in the readout then chances are the blender motors, HEVAC are nadged but it could just be the pollen filters blocked, They should be changed annually. Take a look for water and moould in the spare wheel well. If there is then look at the ariel mounted on the tailgate roof bit. Chances are its been caught on a low sign or car park etc and its bent up from the tailgate letting water in.

dangerous brain
If you can drive behind it and watch the back of the car you can see better if the suspension is working properly. You can't feel it in the car if its leaning or being slow to pump up on the move.

You can't feel it in the car if its leaning or being slow to pump up on the move. Will do, if the air suspension ever does fail, you say £400 will sort it (by removing it for normal springs) the only downside being it won't have adjustable suspension anymore? dangerous brain
Yup thats it mate. To be honest I rarely miss the air ride as the handling is dire on air. To quote Clarkson "it is the worst handling car I have ever driven, its like trying to drive a blancmange". The kit is £400 and its easy to fit yourself.
