Engine Problems this morning. Maybe Crank Pulley?

Morning Everyone,

Started my car this morning, all appeared fine, car a little louder on tickover as it usually is until it warms up a bit and settles.

All of a sudden the car starts roaring a little louder and i can hear a loud rattling. I then hear a bang, and then followed by what I can only describe as a knock sounding like something has broken inside the engine itself and is floating/rattling about. Suddenly it settles back down and then starts ticking over normally!!!!

I switched the engine off and had a look under the hood, and there is a pulley/pulley casing lying in the catch tray. It appears to be from the Crank Pulley. The car starts fine and ticks over fine.

I need some help of what to do next!

How long can I expect to be off the road too? As i need my car to get to work and back!

You're lucky it let go when it did as the damage will be limited (as long as you didn't run it for too long).

The belt drives the water pump, so it will overheat if you leave it running.

If you're happy to change it yourself it's not a big job (if you can get the pulley bolt undone).

It's worth changing the cam belt at the same time if it's about due.

Not sure how much Toyota will charge for a pulley (£200 ish I think?) + an hour or so labour.

Hey,

Thanks for the info. Yeah the minute it went i turned it off. I restarted it for about 5 secs after just to check if it worked which it did thankfully. Ill have a go myself and will do the belt at the same time.

Don't use the stock crank pulley mate; I believe it's the boostlogic one you should be after.

Cheers for the advice. Where can I get a boostlogic one from? Do you know where i can get the best deal from?

Did you notice any symptoms before it failed? Squeeling or creaking sound perhaps?

I had a bit of belt squeal begin to appear on some cold mornings, but then it seemed to disappear! Hasnt squealed once in the last week, and then went and did that this morning! :search:

I thought the squeal was down to the Power Steering Bearing needing changing or something, and the car didnt appear to have the usual crank pulley symptoms.....

`Tis up to you of course, but there is NO WAY I would put anything other than a stock damper / pulley on one of these engines. Unmolested a new one will last longer than you keep the car, and is developed at considerable time and expense to match the harmonics of the stock crank assembly. They usually fail because some dimbo has taken a welding torch to the crank pulley bolt, and then refitted the same pulley after it's been got so hot the rubber elastomer bond in the damper has been compromised. If you HAVE to take a torch to the bolt (and I have only had to do this once in countless pulley removals) ALWAYS fit a new damper and a new oil pump seal.

Thanks for the advise.

I appear to have been very lucky as the car wasnt moving, but ive just had a look under the bonnet in daylight, and it appears that the Auxillary belt pretty much disintergrated as well as the pulley! There's pieces of belt and the crank pulley housing at the bottom of the tray. The belt is split all the way up on what is left of it, and luckily it doesnt seem to have damaged the timing belt.

If id have been moving, im guessing it would have been a different story!

I haven't had one fail, but I think you'd notice very quickly if you were driving. The PAS wouldn't work (heavy steering) and the alternator wouldn't work (warning light/s).

Out of interest, how many miles has the car done and has the cam belt been changed? I ask this, as I'm wondering why your pulley has failed.:search:

Yeah the Cambelt has been changed. However the car is my daily car, and as such has done 102k. How long do these pulleys tend to last?

I agree with CW, get a stock one for a road car. A new pulley is around £200 from Toyota if you get a discount and the cam belt and aux belt are around £35 each. Its not a difficult job to do, so no more than a few hrs labour and any competent mechanic should be able to do it.

Mine's done 95,000 with no outward signs of any problrms. I'd be dissapointed if I had to change it. Ever*.

I suspect you've suffered from the heat issue mentioned in Chris' post.

*200k miles++
