Nissan S13 Technical Help.......

Evening all, well after now owning another Jap turbo'd car, I can really appreciate how reliable and strong the Supra is, cause in all my years of ownership, never had any issues like this, and from reading SXOC it seems this type of stuff is quite common, good old Toyota, and shitty old Nissan lol.....

 

So thought I would post on here in case someone might know something, the car works in much the same way as the Supra, coil packs, AFM's etc.....so pretty smimlar, but also some of you have had experience with S13's.......

 

So from the start, I noticed some slight hesitation after changing gear, car ran fine, idled fine. So thought maybe she could with a bit of service, seeing as I have only had the car about 2 weeks, so me and a mechanic, changed the oil, flushed the cooling system and changed the sparks, but the sparks that were in there were HKS jobbies, and looked fairly new, so put them back in. Then after doing those couple of bits started her up and the idle was hunting, drove her home and she was fine on WOT and no throttle, but was getting really bad hesiation on part throttle. Got her home and then the next day she just wouldnt start at all.

 

So I stole my mates coil packs off his S13, swapped them over today, no difference, tried removing the AFM, no difference, tried removing the IAAC valve (thing on the right hand side of the inlet manifold) and no difference. Wanted to disconnect the knock sensor, but its in a right tricky spot under the inlet manifold by the oil filter so cant really get to it from the top to disconnect it.

 

Also done the ECU diagnostics check, which obviously threw out a nice healthy 55 erro code, which means no fault codes logged, so Im guessing from that I can rule out sensors like engine temp, knock etc......

 

Checked the coil packs with a volt meter and that looked ok, could even see a spark being produced by taking the spark out like you said and erthing it against the engine.

 

Also can hear the fuel pump when ignition is turned on, and several times removed the fuel pump fuse and turned her over to clear her out.

 

So Im certain she is getting fuel, spark (confirmed spark gapping of .8) and air.......AFM/IAAC made no difference, no error codes......

 

But more to the point, what have we disturbed during the service change of a few fluids to cause this......

You've got yourself an S13 now then Ash? Mike will be available in about a weeks time;)

 

Sorry I cant help technically though mate. I'll see the man tomorrow and ask his opinion for you:)

 

Yup got one, just new I shouldnt have showed the shed any love and tried to service it, some old dogs just like to be abused without love, so true to some females lol.....;) Would be good to hear what his thoughts are on it.....

HKS spark plugs could be problematic

 

They are expensive but not *that* much better, perhaps if you popped some different ones in and see what difference that makes...

 

Only other theory i have is that you disturbed some kinda coil pack/plug lead thing like we have on the coil pack clips?

 

Hence why we swapped the coil packs with some others, and confirmed voltage readings and could visably see a spark, you need to read what I said more dude.....:p

 

But I will try different sparks, but really dont think there is anything wrong with them, good volt reading and good visable spark......ggrrrhhhh, so frustrating.....

OK first its an H reg so no lambda, so thats one thing out the way, next i would very carefully clean the AFM hot wire with meths and a fine soft artists brush, i would also put a meter on the ECU water temp sensor pretty sure the s13 has one)and they don't throw a code when these are faulty, plugs i would just put one grade colder NGKs in it and gap to 0.9 or 1.0 the only other thing i can think of is check the DV is no leaking or has a strong enough spring as this will also cause a miss.

As previously said the HKS spark plugs aren't that good. They are made by Denso and I had similar issues when I had them in my GTR. Didn't take long to 'cook' them and cause them to have a slight hesitation/judder. I then fitted NGK iridiums and never had a fault.

 

But I will try different sparks, but really dont think there is anything wrong with them, good volt reading and good visable spark......ggrrrhhhh, so frustrating.....

 

that may change under boost conditions

Cause a miss ? as in missfire, she aint even starting dude.......:blink:

 

Where is the water temp sensor, plugs I will double confirm by swapping, they are already gapped to 0.8/0.9, which is what is recommended though....

Ok, but the hesiation is the last of my worries at the moment, I need to get the thing firing up first, as she aint even starting now.....:(

Mikes expert opinion as follows Ash:

 

The original problem you had could have been the manual boost controller because they do cause the boost to spike which could cause slight hesitation when re-entering on boost. He doesn't recommend them, especially on a CA18 as they are renowned for engine problems.

 

As for the problem you have now, he would have to know a bit more. Give him a call if you like or me as im with him:)
