  1. I just found another thread on there where someone displayed their great wisdom by describing the the Corvette Stingray thus: Right. Okay then. Puny. (Clearly, they've never parked their Fiat Panda next to a Corvette.)
  2. Yes, they slag off everything. The purpose of the site is to show pics of chavved/barried-up Corsas and Saxos. People take photos of inappropriately modded chav mobiles (e.g. a Saxo with four exhausts, big spoiler, tinted windows and too much sound) and then publically slate them. The really bad ones (called 'Shed of the Week') end up in Zoo magazine. When I first stumbled across the site (recommended by a friend), I actually found it quite amusing and instantly ran to take photos of 'Rubharb and Custard' that park in my work car park. One's a yellow Saxo and the other is a red Ford Ka. They're both fully loaded with body kit, wide exhausts, matching wipers, decals and ... bonnet air scoops! However, I've subsequently found out that most of the users of Barry Boys simply like to slag off everything. And they usually do it with a 10 word vocabulary. Anything you post on there (whether compliment, attack or neutral) is likely to be bashed with four-letter word abuse.
  3. A perfectly reasonable example of a Supra has just been submitted to Barry Boys... again: http://www.barryboys.co.uk/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=383894. Fortunately, most readers have come to the conclusion that this car isn't actually a Barry (which shows that they're not *all* morons on there). I felt compelled to personally defend it anyway. Does it belong to anyone on here?
  4. OI!! I was much happier ignorantly believing that my aircon was to blame for my poor dyno result. I'm going to pretend these last few posts never happened. Grrr.
  5. I'm afraid you'll have to allow some artistic licence on that one... I wrote the content myself based on my limited understanding of how these things work. I'm sure I'll have all technical details corrected in due course!!
  6. I do have high-res pics, but obviously did some shrinking for the site. Thanks for the tips... You live and you learn!!
  7. I had the oil changed when I bought the car, a little over a year ago. Since then I've done about 7K miles. However, the turbos have been leaking oil since I bought the car, and I've no idea how long before hand. Since I didn't have any smoke from the exhaust, I've been reluctant to take action until Paul gave me a strong nudge in the right direction.
  8. Only 26!? Surely that's too young for a Supra. Happy Birthday!
  9. Sounds like your graphics card might be overheating or otherwise playing up. Or perhaps not getting enough power. Changed any hardware lately?
  10. Hi guys Sorry for being so quiet. I decided to leave the car at the unit and have it done, as per my guy's original recommendation. He's always been good to me in the past and he has been eager to do a sterling job. The work is progressing and there are a few before and after photos available here. There's a couple of pics showing the hideous state of the camshafts, and pics showing all the engine bits painstakingly cleaned up. There are more pictures yet to come, but they're not on the site yet. The car should be ready for pickup in a couple of days. The only outstanding work is to have some pipes made for a new FMIC. It's a real bummer that I've been without my car so long. I even went and bought a radio-controlled Supra from JL (yes, just like the one James has got) to alleviate the depression. But I guess you can't rush a job like this. Having had a nasty experience with an engine rebuild years ago, I've always been paranoid about getting this sort of thing done right. Even though this wasn't a full rebuild, but just the head off (I'm afraid I don't really know what I'm talking about), it's still a big job that deserves care and attention!! I hope to be back in the Supra community soon... And fully BPU'd!
  11. P.S. Beginning to wish I'd sold up when I heard the turbos were on the way out.
  12. Thanks for all the advice guys. I feel stuck between a rock and a hard place. My guy tells me he's rebuilt around 50 engines. Says he will post some pictures up on here later to confirm the desperate need of my engine. In the meantime, the car is in pieces at a garage that's a good 40 miles from me and I believe work is already underway. Getting a second opinion is always a good idea, but difficult when your car is in pieces and with someone else. What started off as a service is amounting to a huge bill. And once work is underway, there doesn't seem to be any way back.
  13. A local(ish) garage dude who would rather remain anonymous.
  14. That's a very comprehensive site you've got John. I could learn a lot... Someone said "don't rebuild, just decoke head". What does this involve? Sorry for being so dumb.
  15. Thanks all. I'm now wondering if I can get away with not doing the engine rebuild at all. Details are here.
  16. I took my car in for a service recently and it was all downhill from there. My turbos have been pushing out a lot of oil and I was advised to get the repaired or replaced before the oil did any serious engine damage. So I decided to go hybrids and was still fairly cheerful. Now I've found out that the oil may already have done damage. Apparently I've got heavy carbon deposits on the inlet valves and around the rockers and cams. I've been advised to have an engine rebuild which I can ill afford. The thing is... The car was actually running fine when I took it in. So could I just have the engine cleaned superficially without any major rebuild work? If it worked before, it should still work now, right? I've been told that since it's been disturbed (e.g. by removing the turbos) this may not be the case. I'm out of money and running out of options, so any advice would be appreciated.
  17. It seems my turbo has been p1ssing oil around my engine for some time and has caused serious carbon deposits. I've been advised to have an engine rebuild. I've also been offered a free set of HKS 272 cams. My car will be BPU with hybrids at 1.2 bar. Would it be a good move to go with the 272s or should I stick with stock? I hear people saying stuff like idle is lumpy, but how lumpy is lumpy??! Are there any other downsides to such an upgrade? Please bear in mind that I don't know much about engines...
  18. Hi Vil Long time no speak! It's a good tip, and I'll certainly try it out. But in the dry I'm usually quite happy to hit the gas hard and so have no trouble with the kickdown. It's in the wet, when accelerating progressively, where I have the problem. When the gas is all the way to the floor, it sometimes just doesn't kick down. I know it should, since I'm talking about situations where I'm doing about 40-50mph up a hill in third. And I know it can, since I can make it kick down but lifting and then stamping, or by just shifting manually. I'm now wondering if there's a problem with the kickdown switch. Hmm. I'm visiting the garage this afternoon to see the progress on my car, so I might mention it then. Thanks again.
  19. Thanks for the replies people. The car is having some work done at the mo, so can't check the switch. Got to admit... I've never actually seen the switch you're talking about!
  20. You're probably right. I'll just get my coat...
  21. I was just wondering if my kickdown is working properly on my auto TT. Let's say I'm coming off a roundabout in the wet and the exit is up a steep hill. I don't want to accelerate too hard off the roundabout for obvious reasons, so I put my foot down gradually as I leave the roundabout and climb the hill. Although I'm pressing the accelerator smoothly, I still end up pushing the pedal to the floor. But it doesn't kick down! By the time the pedal hits the floor, I'm nice and straight and half the way up the hill. So I want it to kickdown, but the car remains in third and is sluggish. But get this... If I let up on the gas just a tiny bit and then slam it back down, THEN I get the kickdown. I was under the impression that the auto box should always kickdown if you press the pedal to the metal. Am I wrong? Does it only happen if you do it quickly? I guess the proper solution is to slam the auto box into second before I hit the roundabout. But that kind of defeats the point, doesn't it??
  22. On the other hand, some conversions work really well! Check out this one which greatly improves dull old MX5.
