  1. I'm making excuses for this person that I've never met but not everyone uses a computer at work. Why not? Some people hate speaking to strangers on the phone and will do anything to avoid it.
  2. I'd give them the benefit of the doubt, maybe they're in a job where they shouldn't be using their phone at all so have to text to keep it quiet. Or they could just be shy.
  3. I disagree with you completely (but I respect your freedom of speach yada yada....). Kids are kids and always have been, there will always be young boys that do this kind of thing, and those that don't. You can blame genetics, upbringing, poverty, boredum, modern society, computer games, lack of discipline or any combination of the above, but it has always existed.
  4. I agree completely, tv adverts that stereotype men as useless, stupid and incompetent are shockingly common - and it seems to be perfectly acceptable. On a seperate topic, anyone else notice that fat people will be insulted if you call them fat, but they think it's perfectly ok to call a skinny person skinny? Or is it just me?
  5. I saw a Delorean going northbound on the M11 yesterday evening, although I'm sure it didn't have all the BTTF stuff stuck on it.... maybe there was an event going on.
  6. For a minute I was thinking this was another wikipedia special, but unfortunately not. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/8083479.stm
  7. I'll bet that's the one.
  8. No, just look at the date the last post was made. Oh, ok then. Bye.
  9. What about duel residency? Lots of people have two homes and there's nothing dodgy about it.
  10. The interior looks much nicer, and it can do the figures suggested without voiding its warranty!
  11. One of the good things about this book is that it doesn't try to cram an idea or opinion down your throat, but explains to you how 'good science' is conducted, then presents the science behind these modern 'facts', and leaves you to your own conclusions about whether to believe them or not. There's very little in the way of opinion in it, which makes it all the more powerful really.
  12. Glad this thread has been bumped, been meaning to say thanks for the recommendation. I bought this a few weeks ago and it's superb, really makes you look on everything from media stories to TV adverts to making decisions at work in a different light.
  13. Apparently that famous 'blunder' didn't happen..... http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/7042220.stm
  14. I asked about this many years ago, I wanted to do much the same thing as a 'stealthy' way of doing a decat. General opinion was that the exhaust gasses wouldn't flow very well through a gutted cat as it's not a straight, consistent route. I thought about opening it up and welding a pipe through the middle to get around this, but at that point the need to do it vanished (ie I changed insurers ).
  15. Don't patronise me. I don't have to come down on either side of the fence simply because the braying mob of tabloid readers like doing it - I don't jump to conclusions when not in full posession of the facts. I said 'it does seem strange', I didn't say 'the police should be allowed to beat up who they like', because that's just not right. To me, the guy looks like he's acting strangely in what is obviously such a tense situation. Why that is, I don't know. Why the policeman clobbered him one when he didn't seem to be posing any kind of threat, I don't know that either. I'll wait until I know more before making a judgement thanks.
  16. I am real thanks. At what point in my post did I say: A: The policeman was right to hit him B: He shouldn't face any action C: The guy deserved it D: Any of the other stuff you spouted Discussions aren't a case of your point vs everyone elses, get some perspective on things before you start insulting me.
  17. I thought that too TBH, he looked very nonchalant for a guy faced with a line of riot police, as if he was trying to wind them up. I'm not pretending to know the full facts but it does seem strange.
  18. Bit pedantic of me to say this, but that's not what democracy's supposed to be about. It's supposed to be that every person has a voice, not majority rules. Example, is it in the interest of the majority to spend £££££ on the Disability Discrimination Act? Of course it isn't, but to those people it does affect, it makes a big difference to their lives.
  19. I understand where you're coming from, but I can't agree with your first point (it happens when the mind is at rest) - the research says otherwise. Here's a couple of examples: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/7945145.stm http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/4466555.stm Notice the bit in the second story about levels of melatonin, that's just one of the scientific reasons why we're designed to be awake in the day time, and asleep at night. The 8 hours of sleep thing I agree with - I felt healthy, fit etc too and was very good at my job - but having done shift work for so long I didn't realise how much it was dragging me down until I stopped.
  20. And because we've spent millions of years evolving as day dwelling creatures. IIRC everything that your body does like repairing itself to keep you healthy, happens at night.
  21. I did various shifts incuding nights for about 7 years.... gave it up 2 years ago now for a regular job and felt the benefits within a month or two. I didn't realise how much it'd worn me down over the years until I stopped.
