I would suspect that the cable has frayed and is about to break, it's happen on mine and with others on here too. You can't just buy the cable, the full assembly is required. I don't think the motor is included, you can see it in this pic. I used my many skills to just replace the cable with one made for a bike.

We've just done ours, I found that it was best to shop around for everything on the net from different places. We bought an Ideal Standard mixer tap, cheapest was £140 +del I paid 99p +£6 delivery only because the fixing nut was missing, I made one Mira shower mixer off Ebay too and the bowed shower cubicle. I always enjoy watching programmes about the two world war's, this programme gave a great insight into what it was like for some of the soldiers.
