Retribution serves to make the families of the victims feel vindicated. It can also serve as a deterrent to others thinking of committing a similar crime. If we all believed that we didn't have a choice in things, then society would collapse. For someone to have no choice is to have no freedom, and the 'illusion' of freedom is vital for us to feel good about ourselves. That's what gets me about religion - people readily sign up to a dogma that informs them they are mere pawns in god's big game.
