I really like the inside of that. Do you happen to know if the dashboard has been replaced or just sprayed? As you say, not sure about the indicators!
-
It's the first car I've had that I've managed to keep for more than a year Although the XJ8 came close...
-
Now that is a fair point. Picture the scene in the pub: Splurge: Yeah, that's right, I got a new exhaust for my Supe. Splurge's mate: Ooh, let's see (looks out of window). Oh, that's interesting, you've made it look like a chavved-up Vauxhall. Splurge: Poo. Guess I will have to think of a new plan.
-
Both of 'em... which was nice.

> Anyway i like the look of stunned supercar drivers(german and italian ones) as you pass them. Yeah, that is probably the Supra's best standard feature
-
Where are you based, penguin? If you want to come down to Essex and see what a de-cat's like (I don't have any other mods), then let me know.
-
I probably ought to get a new back box to go with my de-cat. I'm not a massive fan of the huge single-bore exhaust (no disrespect to those who are, it's just not for me), so I want to do something slightly different. For example, has anyone seen a Supra with a twin tailpipe anything like these, and if so did it look any good or did it, as it were, blow? Cheers!

Interesting question. For a long time, I wasn't a fan of modding. I though "If it's designed to do x, why try to make it do y?". I considered the matter philosophically for some time, and my eventual conclusion was "Awww, stuff it." One point to consider is that although the original design of the Supra (and indeed most cars these days) is very good, it was built down to a price, so there's always room for improvement. If Toyota's engineers hadn't been limited by the need to make the car relatively affordable, no doubt they would have chosen some higher spec componentry as well. I work for a car manufacturer, and their basic means of operating is that the engineers choose the best components they can regardless of the price, then the bean counters make them choose the worst components they can regardless of performance instead, then they have a big fight, and eventually management force them to meet somewhere in the middle (although usually slightly closer to the bean counters ) Speaking as a recent de-catter, I feel somewhat liberated by the experience (oh, and for the record my mpg has gone up slightly as well - weird).

Well, I've taken the plunge and had a Chris Wilson de-cat, including the restrictor ring, FCD etc. What can I say? Fantastic! It feels like it was meant to be this way. Those annoying little pauses that seemed to affect the car's performance before aren't there any more, the noise is creamy and just that little bit raucous without quite setting the neighbours on edge first thing in the morning, and it just seems to make more of the power more useable all of the time. Thanks to Chris for a top job. Now all I need is a sympathetic MOT station in Essex and I'm laughing. Anybody thinking about getting one and still not quite sure - do it! Guess I still need a new back box to qualify as BPU, huh?
-
I can testify to Chris Wilson's ability. He serviced mine just last weekend (I went up from Essex to get it serviced, along with a de-cat, on the strength of his reputation), and now it runs good as new.

I always try to stick to the principle "If it looks too good to be true, that's because it's not true". Works great for e-mail forwards as well I'm not saying this car is a dog, but without history it might be best to assume that it is until and unless it's proven otherwise. If you buy at a knockdown rate and it turns out to be a dog, you'll end up spending a fortune to get it up to normal, never mind the inconvenience while you spend two months without a car 'cos it's in the garage. You probably thought this already so sorry for going on...

Got mine off Paul Whiffin, too. Top bloke, knows all about the cars.

Very nice, 250. Any chance you could post up a recording of how it sounds? I have found a local company who can build nice cheap custom exhausts and I must admit that I'm considering it. I wonder if you could let me know what persuaded you to go this way rather than getting a brand-name exhaust like an HKS? Oh yeah, and did you get your decat done at the same time or was that an earlier mod?

The odd thing about this review is that the author does not actually appear to have driven the car, simply to have asked a few mates down the pub what people think of it. Curiously, I am often let out of junctions in the Supe. So far as I can see, this could be for one of three reasons: - I am just so incredibly cool and good-looking. Er... - We Essex folk have a much better appreciation of poseurs than everyone else. - It's not 1995 any more, so Supras are owned by normal people rather than "flash gits and lottery winners". And regarding the spoiler, since when has anyone driven a Supra at remotely legal or moral speeds, except very briefly whilst in the process of reaching highly immoral speeds? The giant spoiler is there to keep you stable at very high speeds because, well, we drive at very high speeds. Oh yeah, and because it's so high it doesn't obscure your rear view - very practical.

You think you've got problems - there was me with my standard J-Spec 16" wheels, my standard exhaust... Great day out - the convoy kicked arse at times.

One day I had a silly idea: I decided that I wanted a car with the performance and looks of the best European GTs, the reliability and service intervals of a bog-standard Japanese saloon, the rarity of a relaxed gazelle at a lion convention, and the moddability of a bucket of lego. And what's more, I wanted it all for around £20k. Errr, so I got a Supra, and saved ten grand into the bargain as well. Nice.

When we turn up, how are you going to know it's us, if you see what I mean?

Thanks very much, Simon. I'll get some tonight and top it up. Any particular recommendations on brake fluid, or are they much of a muchness? So presumably my brake fluid sensor is nearer the back of the chamber and Nish's is nearer the front, explaining why we have the same problem the opposite way round? And I guess the fluid expands a bit when it gets warmer, meaning the light comes on more when it's cold? All makes sense when someone tells you the answer! Cheers again.
-
Errr, yes, now you mention it.

Hello everyone, I'm having a seemingly-obscure problem with my Supe and was wondering if anyone has seen anything similar? When I lift off the throttle, the general warning light (red exclamation mark) will sometimes come on. Putting my foot down again makes it go out again, or it will usually go out of its own accord after a couple of seconds. Occasionally it will stay on for longer. It seems to happen more when the car is cold, but this could just be subjective on my part. There are no strange noises, no loss of performance, or anything else that I can associate with the light coming on. It's a J-spec TT auto with no mods. Any suggestions gratefully received.

If it does turn out to be a major problem you can always take the polyfoam stuff out of the boot - this stuff goes either side of the spare wheel and seems to take up quite a bit of space. Pro: You get more boot space. Con: You won't have a flat boot floor any more. You could even take out the spare as well... if you're feeling lucky.

Thanks all for your advice. Basically, it sounds like I can't go far wrong if I stick to a well-known brand. Now all I have to do is wait for the money to come through next month and I'll be laughing all the way to work.

I've been saving up some cash and now the time has come to get a new exhaust system, but I don't know much about these sorts of things so I would really appreciate your expert advice. I've heard that the best thing to do is to have both cats taken out and then fit a cat-back exhaust so you can still pass your MOT - is this true? Also, what's everyone's opinion on the best-sounding exhaust? I am looking for something that really brings out the creamy snarliness (can I say that?) of the six-cylinder without being so loud that it offends the entire neighbourhood. How much extra do you think I'm looking at to get this all fitted? It's a J-spec TT, by the way. Cheers!
